Image: OP_RP1

Also, if you haven't done so, make sure to grab this free MP3 of Dan Deacon's remix of "Lewis Takes Off His Shirt".

Finally, Ryan Weaver with The Bostonist has this to say about Owen's recent show at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art:

Musician Owen Pallett (whom we interviewed about his latest work last week) won some major points with his audience last Tuesday at the Institute of Contemporary Art by dismissing the fact that Pitchfork recently gave his newest album, Heartland, an 8.6 rating.

“They called it a slam dunk,” teased Pallett's accompanist, Thomas Gill, grinning.

“Shut up!” said Pallett, then laughed and kept playing.

If you read our previous hilarious interview with the idiosyncratic violinist, this reaction wouldn't come as much of a surprise: Pallett is a funny guy. But it did seem to be a kind of watershed moment in Pallett's admirable performance, and perhaps a watershed moment in music, as well, if only for those who were in the room.

One might imagine that Pallett, a gay man who weaves Dungeons and Dragons references into his work, has had his fair share of scrapes—and has thusly come out the other end not giving a shit what anyone else thinks. He certainly looks it: on Tuesday, he wore a black Van Halen t-shirt, black jeans, and black shoes, appearing more like a computer programmer than a rock star. But that was, ironically, what made him so rock 'n roll.

For in an age when artists are thrown into the national spotlight for the approbation of the blogerati on the strength of one twee EP, before they've had a chance to prove their chops or take many hits to the chin, this not-giving-a-shit quality has given way to a kind of quiet calculation. One gets the sense, these days, that many bands are donning their flannel and scuffed sneakers the way politicians don flag pins before re-election: because it's expected, because it's easy.

Not Owen Pallett. All available evidence points to Pallett not giving a shit. And his fans love him for it.

Pallett's fans also clearly love him because he's a musical virtuoso, perhaps even a genius. His album, a postmodern concept piece about a fictional farmer that would feel like bad poetry in the hands of a lesser artist, comes off like a 21st century
Leaves of Grass or Tropic of Cancer: That is, something you pick up, attempt to understand, and fail to understand because the task is impossible—yet you leave the experience feeling invigorated, inspired, and a little more crazy and brave than you were before.

The audience at the ICA featured the usual proliferation of buffalo plaid and taciturn faces you'd expect to see at a Decemberists or Andrew Bird show, but a sense of tenderness in the room really set Pallett's show apart.

Perhaps it felt different because it's difficult to sit almost suspended over the ocean, as the sun's going down and bathing the room in poignant light, and beautiful strains of strings are raining down in sheets, enhanced by the ICA's excellent acoustics, and not feel transported.

Perhaps it was different because the openers, Snowblink, softened us up with a beautiful set that included a "really melancholy" cover of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" that blended Daniela Gesundheit's gorgeous looped vocals with a recording of Jackson's own voice.

Perhaps it was different because Pallett himself is so uninhibited a performer, shouting his arch lyrics into his violin's microphone and playing so furiously that his hands become a blur.

Or perhaps it was different because the kind of artistically-inclined people who might find themselves moved by one of the museum's modern art exhibits, and who willingly enter a scenario where they might be moved, are the kind of people who sought out this concert experience--looking to tap into the mysterious wellspring of free-flowing emotion from which Pallett draws his daring lyrics and ambitious full-orchestra compositions.

Probably it was all of those things.

Whatever it was, it worked for us. In the parlance of Jeff Bebe in Almost Famous, Pallett found that person in the audience who wasn't getting off, and made them get off. This is what musical virtuosos are meant to do. And sometimes it seems we have forgotten this as a culture.

Of course, we can all draw distinctions between easy music and difficult music. The former is recognizable enough for its pop structure and easily audible lyrics, which invariably include a punchline that ties everything together and comforts the listener with closure. Kelly Clarkson will not hook up. Garth Brooks will take two pina coladas, one for each hand. Simple. And then there's the other stuff, songs with rambling verses and ambivalent endings. Music like Wolf Parade or Animal Collective, songs where no one's sure if anyone gets the girl in the end, or if there is a girl, or exactly what an adobe slat is. Those of us that listen to this music on the regular tend to pat ourselves on the back for it and consider ourselves cultured.

But we sometimes forget that there are more than two kinds of music. There remains plenty of music beyond the horizon of everyday indie: music that has the power to remind us that listening to good music is not simply about making aesthetic choices we perceive as more selective. Good music is, in the end, about making us feel feelings—feelings that go far beyond simple admiration or boredom.

And so the power of the virtuoso is to help us to remember. Remember that musicians are not meant to simply to wow us with their antics, make us dance, or even make us look cool. That a concert is not simply a transaction where we pay money and wait to be impressed.

The virtuoso reminds us that, at its best, a concert is a demonstration of the full range of human potential, a chance for both composer and listener to tap into the higher registers of tone and emotion, places we don’t normally go in our buffalo plaid with our arms crossed. Places for complete confusion and utter tenderness.

And this is why Pallett may not be kidding when he acts like he doesn't care about Pitchfork. Because perhaps he realizes that their 0-10 scale is not the only way to measure the meaning of what he does, and because if he is going to care about anything at all (which is not guaranteed), he will care about what you think.

So now your job is to decide: if you didn't care about what Pitchfork thought of Owen Pallett, what would you think about him?

Scary, isn't it?

STEVE REID

Steve Reid Ensemble | 04/13/10

Image: Stevereid3

Domino are very sad to hear the news of the death of Steve Reid, who passed away in his sleep last night after a battle with cancer.

Steve Reid was a giant of a drummer, who began playing professionally at the age of 16.  His first recorded work was with Martha And The Vandellas, working in the Apollo Theatre House band, under the direction of Quincy Jones.  Over the years Steve recorded and played with artists such as Miles Davies, Fela Kuti, James Brown and Sun Ra, amongst other musical legends.

Domino had the pleasure of releasing The Steve Reid Ensemble’s Daxaar album in 2007 and Steve’s groundbreaking works with Kieran Hebden, the albums The Exchange Session Vol. 1, The Exchange Session Vol. 2, Tongues and most recently, NYC.  Our thoughts go out to Steve’s family, friends and ‘musical soul mate’ Kieran Hebden who had these words to say: "Steve was one of my great friends and the most wonderful musician I have ever encountered. The music and adventures we shared have been some of the most happy and meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. A true inspiration. He lived a great life and gave us incredible music. I’ll miss him forever."

STREAM THESE NEW PURITANS "HIDDEN"

These New Puritans | 03/03/10

Image: These New Puritans by Harley Weir

A full-album stream of These New Puritans Hidden is now available on Soundcloud. Hidden is now available in CD, LP and digital from the Domino Mart and outstanding retailers everywhere.

Hidden marks the next step for These New Puritans since Beat Pyramid infiltrated the minds and hearts of people yearning to find a band who would challenge, perplex and mesmerise in equal measure.

Produced by TNPS's Jack Barnett and Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis, Boymerang) and mixed by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, MF DOOM) the album draws equally on on the rhythmic lexicons of dancehall and 20th century post-minimalism, with instrumentation redolent of both the oceanic brass of Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes and the plastic textures of modern U.S. pop. It is sometimes brutal, sometimes melancholy, and sounds like nothing else.

"We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues" is a tale of insatiable lust, full of twisted bawdiness and louche adventures, in Wild Beasts unique, inimitable style. The video was directed by Luke Seomore and Joseph Bull (Institute For Eyes).

BENJY FERREE: DAYTROTTER SESSION

Benjy Ferree | 02/12/10

Image: Benjy Ferree Daytrotter Session Image

Check out Benjy Ferree's new Daytrotter Session. He performed 'Fear' and 'The Grips' from Come Back To The Five And Dime, Bobby Dee and a previously unreleased track called 'I'm So Young'.

As Daytrotter's Sean Moeller concludes, "Ferree [is] a master of thoughtful and disgustingly hooky pop songs...that often focus on characters, long-dead actors from the stage and screen, fascinating cads and drifters/next-door-neighbors and landlords, bar patrons who have gifted him some of their twisted yet authentic life experiences. Ferree is such a people person and a collector of their eccentricities that he's one as well, an artist as interesting as they come, crafting these songs rooted in old soul and doo-wop music and acting like salty characters from the turn of the century and earlier." We couldn't agree more.

DIRTY PROJECTORS PERFORM THE GETTY ADDRESS

02/01/10

Image: DPs_webArtist

On February 19th in New York and February 27th in Los Angeles, Dirty Projectors will present The Getty Address in full. They will be assisted by the 15-piece contemporary music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, conducted by Alan Pierson. In addition, they will play a set of material from their most recent album, Bitte Orca.

The New York show will take place at the Lincoln Center as part of the acclaimed American Songbook series. Since it was launched in 1998, American Songbook at Lincoln Center has been dedicated to celebrating the achievements of American popular song from the turn of the 20th century to the present.

In Los Angeles, Dirty Projectors will co-headline the Walt Disney concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The concert will be a collaborative endeavor: the first half of the program features the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing orchestral pieces chosen with David Longstreth. The Getty Address will be presented during the second half of the program.

The New York show is sold out; tickets to the Los Angeles show at Disney Hall are still available.

Broad popular acclaim notwithstanding, The Getty Address is kind of like the 36 Chambers of indie rock, or at least of Dirty Projectors' long, weird back catalog. Its unsettling mix of jokes, high concept and existential urgency plays out over heavy sequenced beats, choirs of women and orchestral arrangements that sound as if they've been sourced from a Jodorowsky film. The story it tells — roughly about a guy named Don Henley who falls in love with a girl named Sacagawea — is set in a bed of free association, arcane symbology, and hermetic self-reference. At the time of its release in 2005, it did not garner a great deal of attention, although it has acquired a small cult following in the intervening years.

You can read the letter David Longstreth wrote to Don Henley in 2005 about The Getty Address HERE.

CELEBRATE THE 'SNOWPOCALYPSE' WITH MALACHAI!

Malachai | 02/01/10

Image: malachai

Malachai’s origins are in Bristol, on the West Coast of England in Briston and are indicative of the kind of artists that originate from Bristol: dubstep running through their bones, hip hop in the fingers, ‘60s psychedelia in the heart.  It’s only right, then, that Portishead mastermind Geoff Barrow has a thumb in this project.  Barrow’s a kind of a mentor for Malachai and released the album on his own Invada imprint last year, before being picked up by Domino.

There’s certainly no repetition here.  At times, the album sounds like a Jamaican garage rock band. Elsewhere it sounds like Merseybeat if the beats were supplied by RZA. Or Dick Dale surfing the River Severn.  Malachai loves psychedelic music too,  “the colour,  the innocence and optimism of it all, ” but Gee’s “more of a two minute and out man.” That’s why some of it sounds like an ADHD kid flicking through the Nuggets box set.  At other times, Malachai’s music sounds like the apocalypse itself.  One track, “Fading World,” was written after watching a news report on Hurricane Katrina.  “I suppose I was taken aback by just how much at the mercy of the elements we are, but mostly at the plums who run things and where their priorities lay, ” says Gee.

Please enjoy this MP3 of “Snowflake”. Or stream it here.

Malachai's Ugly Side Of Love is out now.

Heartland, the third album by Owen Pallett, is a panoramic and orchestral work; a song cycle of Contemporary Fiction, and Owen Pallett's finest work to date. It is a unique modern musical statement. A record comprising twelve concise songs informed by the traditions of pop, which are based on one long narrative concept, and played by an orchestra. The result is an extraordinary piece of work ringing to the sound of its distinct sense of ambition, warmth and emotion.
