Toronto-based Austra’s Habitat, a brand-new four-track EP, is out this week. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12" here from Austra or download from iTunes

Watch the Matt Lambert-directed video of the EP's title track below. Director Lambert says the video "explores the fragile and tender moments of anxiety and anticipation that lead up to first intimate contact".

Stream/embed the entire Habitat EP and read a recent Q&A with Austra’s Katie Stelmanis at Rookie Magazine here.

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella and Sasquatch and have upcoming festivals in Canada and Europe including a show at Oval Space in London on 10th July. More North American dates will be announced soon.

“'Habitat' is an old song that we've waited almost three years to release," says the band's Katie Stelmanis. "It didn't seem to fit with the sounds of Feel it Break or Olympia, so we decided to finally put it out as a single along with 3 new instrumental tracks. There's a lot of live versions of the song online but people have always pressed us to make a proper recording, so we are especially excited to announce these limited-edition physical copies of the EP. It’s a euro-style computer music experiment produced with love from me, Maya, and Dorian."

ANNA CALVI SHARES 'STRANGE WEATHER' VIDEO

Anna Calvi | 05/28/14

Image: Anna Calvi ep news photo

Anna Calvi has shared a video for ‘Strange Weather’, the lead single taken from her forthcoming EP of the same name, released on July 15, 2014. The accompanying video was filmed in New York by Alan Del Rio Ortiz.

‘Strange Weather’, a cover of the Keren Ann track, is a stunning collaboration between Anna Calvi and David Byrne.

The 5 track covers EP was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York. It features covers of tracks by Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin and Keren Ann. The cover of Suicide’s Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify’, which is available to stream below.

Pre-order the limited edition CD and 12" from the Domino Mart or digitally from iTunes.

David Byrne said the following on working with Anna:

‘I’m a big fan of Anna's two records... and I caught her tour after her first record at Bowery Ballroom here in NY. ‘Epic’ I think is the word that is often used. So when Thomas Bartlett said he was going to be in the studio producing an EP of Anna doing covers I immediately agreed to join in. I was invited to suggest songs and I loved the last Keren Ann record and I thought Strange Weather had a haunting quality that might suit Anna.... so we did that, and Anna then suggested I join in on the Connan Mockasin track she'd done too.’

WHITE LUNG SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR "FACE DOWN"

White Lung | 05/15/14

Image: White Lung Face Down

White Lung have dosed us with another visceral video, "Face Down", from their upcoming full-length album, Deep Fantasy, out June 17th via Domino.

Vocalist Mish Way explains the video: "Basically, I had this really big vision for it where I wanted to rip off two different old videos, one involving Anthony Kiedis. But then, I asked Pierce McGary to do it and I knew he would have a totally different perspective and make it all "Pierce", which was exactly what I wanted. His filming style reflects this L7 video I love "Stuck Here Again" and he turned it out."

Deep Fantasy
is their third full-length and proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears that Vancouver’s hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)  Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With the Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  Guitarist Kenneth William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Anne-Marie Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

After a year plus of near constant touring behind last album, Sorry — which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview —White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who also did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It’s the Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one.  Kenneth William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Deep Fantasy will be available to pre-order. 1,000 limited edition (WIGLP335X) coke bottle clear vinyl with a 9"x24" folded screen-printed poster will be available, plus 50 randomly selected fans will receive a fanzine designed by the band. This will be available through Dom Mart and Indies.  Pre-order the album HERE and through iTunes HERE

ANNA CALVI ANNOUNCES 'STRANGE WEATHER' EP, LISTEN TO 'PAPI PACIFY' COVER

Anna Calvi | 05/13/14

Image: Strange Weather EP

Anna Calvi is to release a 5 track covers EP entitled ‘Strange Weather’, on July 15, 2014. Produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York, the EP features covers of tracks by Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin as well as a stunning collaboration with David Byrne on the title track, a cover of Keren Ann’s ‘Strange Weather’

The cover of Suicide’s Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify.’ Listen to the FKA twigs cover below:

Strange Weather EP tracklisting:

1. Papi Pacify (FKA twigs)
2. I’m The Man, That Will Find You (Connan Mockasin) – featuring David Byrne
3. Ghost Rider (Suicide)
4. Strange Weather (Keren Ann) – Anna Calvi and David Byrne
5. Lady Grinning Soul (David Bowie)

Pre-order the limited edition CD and 12" from the Domino Mart.

AUSTRA ANNOUNCE HABITAT EP; LISTEN TO TITLE TRACK

Austra | 05/06/14

Image: Austra Habitat cover

Austra is set to release a brand new four-track Habitat EP on June 17th. Listen to the title track below.

“Habitat is an old song that we've waited almost three years to release, says the band's Katie Stelmanis.

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella. In addition to a series of upcoming North American festivals such as Sasquatch in George, WA and Field Trip in Toronto, the band have several UK and European shows over the summer. See all dates below.

Austra's last studio album Olympia was written and recorded in collaboration with members of Austra's touring band. The album takes influences from musical sources including South American wind ensembles, eastern folk music, 80s industrial and Chicago house. Olympia remains a pop record of deep layers and subtle gesture.

JON HOPKINS "WE DISAPPEAR FEAT. LULU JAMES"; JULY NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

Jon Hopkins | 05/01/14

Image: Jon Hopkins We Disappear

Today, Jon Hopkins shares “We Disappear feat. Lulu James,” a collaborative reworking of the opening track from the Mercury-nominated Immunity. Listen to it below. The title track will be available backed with a remix by Moderat digitally and on 12” vinyl on June 30. The title track is available to purchase digitally now.

This is the second collaboration on an Immunity single, following up “Breathe This Air feat. Purity Ring.” A fan of Hopkins’ work, and known for her beautifully emotive, atmospheric vocals, it seemed right for rising star Lulu James to contribute vocals to “We Disappear.” The pair met when performing at Unknown Festival in Croatia, then soon after put down vocals at Hopkins' London studio. Hopkins then built a new version of the track around James' contributions, and the result is much sparser, and almost Lynchian - darkly atmospheric, pulsing and retaining the urgency of the original, but adding new depth with James' stunningly soulful vocal performance.

Since the release of Immunity, Jon Hopkins has taken his live show around all corners of the globe and played some of his biggest shows to date. This summer, Hopkins will return to North America for several headline shows and festival performances including Pitchfork Music Festival and Osheaga. All North American shows go on sale tomorrow, Friday May 2.  A full list of dates is below.

Hynes recently played to massive crowds for his very first Coachella performance, sold out must-see shows in NYC, LA and San Francisco, and recently performed as a special guest at this year’s Armory Week party for the MoMA.  Cupid Deluxe made countless year-end lists, including NPR Music’s “Top 50 Albums of 2014,” Rolling Stones’ “Top 100 Songs of 2014” and many more.   GQ recently called him “2014’s answer to Lou Reed,” while the New York Times gushed, “The work of Devonté Hynes radiates a thorough, passionate, forgetting-to-eat-or-sleep love for the last 30 years of pop.”

Hynes has also recently announced a rare performance in NYC on August 16th and Central Park Summerstage, following his festival set at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 1st.

WHITE LUNG SHARE NEW TRACK, "SNAKE JAW"

White Lung | 04/23/14

Image: White Lung Snake Jaw

White Lung hit us with another ripper, "Snake Jaw" which is included as the B-Side to their Drown With The Monster 7” which is out next Tuesday,
April 29, 12014 on Domino Recording Co.

"Snake Jaw" is also featured on White Lung’s upcoming full-length album, Deep Fantasy, out June 17, 2014.

Rookie Magazine had the lead with the track and spoke to Mish Way about the song’s themes:

“That song’s about body dysmorphia and its residuals. I feel like I there are two women battling in my head sometimes: my completely confident self who can tell anyone to fuck off at the flick of a finger, and this other woman who hates herself, her body, and her mind, not because she actually hates herself, but because she has been told by her culture to hate herself for not being MORE, BETTER, THINNER, PRETTIER. Being crippled by a hatred for your own body—why? How did that happen to our fucking culture?”

Their third full-length album, Deep Fantasy, proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears the hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

After a year plus of near constant touring behind last album, Sorry — which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview —White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William.  Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia with producer Jesse Gander (who also worked on both Sorry and their 2010 debut It’s The Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one.  William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction ("Drown With The Monster"), body dysmorphia ("Snake Jaw") and sexual dynamics ("Down It Goes") amongst other dinner table topics.  Kenneth, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Deep Fantasy will be available to pre-order. 1,000 limited edition LPS (WIGLP335X) Coke Bottle Clear vinyl with a 9"x24" folded screen-printed poster will be available, plus 50 randomly selected fans will receive a fanzine designed by the band. This will be available through Domino Mart and can be pre-ordered HERE.

The new White Lung 7" single "Drown With The Monster" is available digitally (RUG548D) and will be available on limited edition 7" (RUIG548) on April 29, 2014 via Domino Mart HERE and via iTunes HERE.

WILD BEASTS 'A SIMPLE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH' VIDEO; NEW NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

Wild Beasts | 04/07/14

Image: Wild Beasts A Simple Beautiful Truth video still

Watch the new video below for 'A Simple Beautiful Truth' from Wild Beasts most recent studio album, Present Tense

The band discusses their inspiration behind the video, filmed by Klaus Thymann:

"We were inspired enough by the absurdist approach taken by Talking Heads to don electric suits and dance in the ether on the top of a Beacons mountain. We wanted to capture the weightlessness of a song like 'A Simple Beautiful Truth,' to attempt something so ridiculous as to be sublime. The experience was strangely liberating and we asked ourselves why we hadn't done this before."

After performing sold out US release shows earlier this year in New York and Los Angeles, we're happy to announce a July North American headlining tour dates that includes Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, IL. More US dates will be announced soon. Check out the dates below their performance of 'A Simple Beautiful Truth' on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Watch/hear the rest of the session here.

WHITE LUNG ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'DEEP FANTASY' OUT JUNE 17, 2014

WHITE LUNG ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DEEP FANTASY OUT JUNE 17, 2014

Resilient and hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit, White Lung are set to release their third album Deep Fantasy via Domino Recording Co. on June 17th.  The band is every bit as confrontational as before, but they’ve managed to open their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

After a year plus of near constant touring behind Sorry — which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview —White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William.  Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who also did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It’s The Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one.  William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With The Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.
