JON HOPKINS ANNOUNCES 'IMMUNITY'; WATCH ALBUM TRAILER
Jon Hopkins | 03/06/13
Jon Hopkins is to release Immunity, his fourth solo album and follow up to 2009's Insides, on Domino on June 4th (North America) / June 3rd (rest of the world).
A powerful, multi-faceted beast, packed with the most aggressively dancefloor-focused music Hopkins has ever made, Immunity is about achieving euphoric states through music. Inspired by the arc of an epic night out, the album peaks with "Collider," a huge, apocalyptic, techno monster and dissolves with the quiet, heartbreakingly beautiful closer, "Immunity," a track featuring vocals from King Creosote which could sit comfortably alongside the gems of their 2011 Mercury-nominated collaboration, Diamond Mine.
Immunity is a confident, dramatic record defined by an acute sense of physicality and place. It feels like the hypnotic accompaniment to a journey of creativity, a trip inside Hopkins' mind, using analog synthesis alongside manipulations of physical, real-world sounds to make dance music that feels as natural and unforced as possible.
Immunity is the most human electronic album you'll hear this year.
Watch a psychedelic album trailer made by Craig Ward below. Food dyes crystallize under a microscope, creating an anisotropic, kaleidoscopic world of color.
Immunity tracklisting:
1. We Disappear
2. Open Eye Signal
3. Breathe This Air
4. Collider
5. Abandon Window
6. Form By Firelight
7. Sun Harmonics
8. Immunity

BILL RYDER-JONES ANNOUNCES DOMINO DEBUT; SHARES ‘HE TOOK YOU IN HIS ARMS’ VIDEO
Bill Ryder-Jones | 03/01/13
Bill Ryder-Jones has filmed a video for He Took You In His Arms, the first track to be aired from the forthcoming his new album A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart out April 23 (North America) / April 8 (Rest of the world). It was shot across a number of locations important to the album’s conception - his teenage bedroom frozen in time at his Mother’s house still complete with 90’s Liverpool FC paraphernalia, the beach at the end of her road, the famous ferry across Liverpool’s Mersey River and the streets, houses and pubs that colour Ryder-Jones’ life each day.
The video was shot by rising star Alex Southam who has previously shot videos for Alt-J, The Walkmen & Lianne La Havas. It can be viewed below:
A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart, marries Ryder-Jones masterful capacities as arranger and composer with his first firm steps as a singer songwriter. It’s an album of capital-S songs that will more than sate the appetite of those that appreciate his knack for heart swelling melody and painterly detail.. Warmly melodic, majestically textured and bravely intimate, 'A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart' confirms the talent which has been recognised by admirers and collaborators, Alex Turner, Graham Coxon and Noel Gallagher. Bill Ryder-Jones is a songwriter and musician who has quietly been staking his claim as one of the generation's most gifted for over a decade.
The album was recorded in Ryder-Jones’ old bedroom in the upstairs of his mother’s house in Liverpool. Two friends from local band By The Sea made up the backing band for the recordings, which were then produced and mixed together with James Ford.
A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart is available to pre-order on CD, gatefold double LP here.
PASTELISM 2013
The Pastels | 02/19/13
We're happy to confirm that The Pastels have completed their brilliant new album Slow Summits, which will be released on May 28 2013 (North America) / May 27 2013 (Rest of the world).
Slow Summits is the culmination of all the music they've been engaged in since their 1997 set, Illumination. Not quite as shadowy a presence as sometimes suggested, their music has continued to grow by way of other activities; a well regarded film soundtrack (The Last Great Wilderness, Geographic, 2003), some theatre pieces (for 12 Stars) and a collaboration with Japan's Tenniscoats (Two Sunsets, Geographic, 2009). Slow Summits gathers on all these works but moves off in newer and older ways too with its flowing montage of autumn instrumentals, pop songs, slow motion build ups and suddenly optimistic melody lines.
Recorded in Glasgow by John McEntire and Bal Cooke, and mixed in Chicago by McEntire, Slow Summits features the core Pastels lineup of Stephen McRobbie, Katrina Mitchell, Tom Crossley, Gerard Love, Alison Mitchell and John Hogarty. Guests include original member Annabel Wright (Aggi) and Norman Blake. Two-thirds of To Rococo Rot (Stefan Schneider and Ronald Lippok) contribute and Tenniscoats too. Kicking Leaves features a memorable string arrangement from Craig Armstrong, the Glasgow-based composer. It features a two drum sets approach to music, a love of elongated jams and the turnaround.
Tracklisting is as follows:
1 Secret Music
2 Night Time Made Us
3 Check My Heart
4 Summer Rain
5 After Image
6 Kicking Leaves
7 Wrong Light
8 Slow Summits
9 Come to the Dance
We're sure that Slow Summits is going to leave a deep impression on 2013 and can't wait to bring it to you.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE RELEASE NEW GASPAR NOé DIRECTED VIDEO FOR "APPLESAUCE"
Animal Collective | 01/29/13

Animal Collective is pleased to announce the premiere of their new music video for “Applesauce” via Pitchfork x YouTube. Directed by filmmaker Gaspar Noé (“Enter The Void,” “Irreversible”), the video stars Lindsey Wixson and features elements from Paul Sharits' 1968 short film “N:O:T:H:I:N:G”. It is intended to be viewed in complete darkness for maximum effect.
“Applesauce” is the latest single from the band’s 10th album, Centipede Hz. The band’s first record since 2007’s Strawberry Jam to feature all four original band members, Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deakin, Centipede Hz was hailed by critics as a return to the band’s experimental roots. The album can be ordered via the Animal Collective webstore here.
Animal Collective is also heading back on the road this spring for their first North American tour of 2013. Joined by labelmate Dan Deacon, the band kicks off the tour in Boston on March 7th and finds Animal Collective traveling through Montreal, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, and more. Animal Collective is also making a very special appearance at the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, ID on March 24th to conclude their tour. The band will once again bring their impressive stage show on tour, which was aptly described by Pitchfork as “giant, gap-toothed Nickelodeon dentures on either side, a curved inflatable structure that resembled scorpion tails dipped in PAAS dye, a centralized TV running constant, blaring images. Basically, the cover of Centipede Hz gone widescreen.” Tickets for the shows can be purchased at: http://bit.ly/animaltix.

VILLAGERS ANNOUNCE {AWAYLAND}; WATCH 'NOTHING ARRIVED' VIDEO
Villagers | 11/20/12
All of us at Domino are super-excited to announce details of Villagers’ new album {Awayland}, which will be released on April 9th 2013 (North America) / January 14th 2013 (Rest of the world).
{Awayland} is the follow up to the Mercury-nominated and Ivor Novello Award winning debut, Becoming a Jackal. Engineered, produced and mixed at Attica Audio in Donegal by Conor J. O’Brien and Villagers’ guitarist Tommy McLaughlin, the album will be released on CD, LP and digitally.
"Nothing Arrived" is a song of epic proportions and of much beauty, showcasing another side to the band's multifaceted, highly anticipated forthcoming album. The accompanying video, directed by Alden Volney, documents a day in the life of one Terrence Bliss - a lonely office worker whose repetitive existence is momentarily disturbed. Watch it below or here.
While every instrument on Becoming a Jackal was performed almost entirely by songwriter Conor J. O'Brien on his own, {Awayland} is an entirely different beast, with O'Brien inviting his fellow touring partners to perform his songs as a group, allowing a certain level of collaborative inventiveness to inform the arrangements.
After initially beginning to write material for {Awayland} on his acoustic guitar, O'Brien felt he needed to take a new and different approach, "flip on its head the idea of what music is for myself," and began creating musical landscapes, listening to widescreen instrumental music like Lalo Schifrin and David Axelrod. There is a different kind of movement on {Awayland}, an exploration of what O'Brien felt was most important, yet not immediately obvious. Trees, birds, the sea - all recurring images in O'Brien's work that provide a kind of metaphor for living and dying, and the sense of soaring otherness. The record is possessed with playful joy as it is with devastation, a filtering of disparate influences - the quiet elegance of Nick Drake, and the sensuality of Curtis Mayfield. It is, as Kurt Vonnegut might have put it "intricate and voluptuous and enchanted and absurd" (Slaughterhouse-Five, Chapter 6)- life, in other words.
Villagers are Conor O'Brien (vocals/guitar), Cormac Curran (keys), Danny Snow (bass), James Byrne (drums), and Tommy McLaughlin (guitar).

"cosmically expansive and yet twangily intimate" Spin
"The album's poppier tracks are woven together with songs that explore the band's capacity for atmosphere and mood, and the entire record sets one remarkably cohesive, hallucinatory tone." MPR's the Current
"has a psychedelic twist and controlled exuberance that shows off why Night Moves is an interesting band to keep on your radar. Guitars and synth soar to cosmic heights, but the vocals somehow remain down to earth" Magnet

DUCKTAILS ANNOUNCE 'THE FLOWER LANE,' LISTEN TO TITLE TRACK
Ducktails | 10/10/12
Ducktails, the increasingly less "solo" endeavour of Real Estate's Matt Mondanile, is set to release The Flower Lane, which is the project's fourth album and his first for Domino. Recorded and mixed over the summer of 2012 with Al Carlson (Peaking Lights, Oneohtrix Point Never), as Mondanile's hectic schedule as a concurrent member of Real Estate began to wind down after a year in support of their Domino debut album, Days, the ten track album will hit the streets on January 29th to be preceded by the single release of effervescent pop gem, ‘Letter of Intent’.
You can hear the title track, 'The Flower Lane' right now:
Taking a tangential turn away from solo home-recording of past releases toward the more collaborative environment of the studio, Ducktails' Matt Mondanile roped in close friends and colleagues to make something more adventurous yet easy-going. The ten songs on The Flower Lane move across a range of expressive pop songs that are bright and expansive, but venture even further with forays into saxophone leads, synth lines and piano accompaniment that would have been at home on the early records of sophisticated guitar pop icons such as Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout.
With brooding seducers ‘Under Cover’, ‘The Flower Lane’ and ‘Sedan Magic’ along with a stunning cover of founding Clean/Chills member Peter Gutteridge's ‘Planet Phrom’, the ambient pop of The Flower Lane is, from start to finish, as spirited as the time these folks had recording it. Support came in many forms, from the backing of the New Jersey band Big Troubles to contributions from Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Joel Ford (Ford + Lopatin), Madeline Follin (Cults) and Sam Mehran (Outer Limitz), to name a few, The Flower Lane defies the cliché of "embracing the big studio" by successfully making the songs feel immediate on an emotional level after they've passed through the dozen other wizardly minds of the studio collaboration while still conveying the fun they had working together.
One of the standouts on The Flower Lane is the duet between Future Shuttle's Jessa Farkas and Big Trouble's Ian Drennan on ‘Letter of Intent’. As with Felt's ‘Primitive Painters’, where the contrasting voices of Lawrence Hayward and Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser exchange pained verses or with Tom Petty's seductively plodding collaboration with former Eurythmic Dave Stewart on his synth-driven hit ‘Don't Come Around Here No More’, ‘Letter Of Intent’ is proof of the expanding range of Ducktails' song craft.

Ulrich Schnauss | 10/09/12
German-born electronic artist Ulrich Schnauss is set to release his long-awaited new album, A Long Way To Fall, on Domino in North America and his own Scripted Realities imprint in the rest of the world in early 2013. His fourth album, A Long Way To Fall returns to the punchier rhythms and pronounced lead work of his landmark album, A Strangely Isolated Place, while incorporating some new textures and sounds from his earlier sonic explorations.
Schnauss explains:
Throughout the last decade, I recorded three albums that were trying to translate the early 90's shoegaze aesthetic into an electronic context. After finishing the last album, Goodbye, I felt a need for a change of direction. At the same time, my music taste was changing drastically. While I had spent a couple of years mainly listening to songwriting based music (a lot of 'indie'/band-type stuff), I was now rediscovering my love for electronic music based on more open structures. This provided the main inspiration of trying to record an album that would celebrate the synthesizer as the very capable musical instrument that it is, but without the need to disguise it behind a wall of echo and reverb. What satisfies me the most about this album is that I think I've managed to create a record that has a coherent, cohesive narrative.

DIRTY PROJECTORS UNVEIL 'HI CUSTODIAN' FILM
Dirty Projectors | 09/07/12
HI CUSTODIAN, a Dirty Projectors short film featuring music from the band's critically acclaimed new album Swing Lo Magellan, premiered last night at New York City's prestigious Landmark Sunshine Cinema. The film, directed by Dave Longstreth himself and produced in collaboration with Pitchfork, is now available to view exclusively on Pitchfork.TV x YouTube. Watch it now:
Songwriter-director Longstreth described the film as "made out of a dream," adding, "it was so fun getting into these alternate personas, inhabiting them, and I think we came up with some amazing images."
HI CUSTODIAN stars band members David Longstreth, Amber Coffman, Haley Dekle, Nat Baldwin, and Mike Johnson. It was filmed over the course of five days in late April in several locations in Southern California. Inspired by music films like Kanye West's Runaway and Prince's Purple Rain, it follows band members as they inhabit a variety of characters in a surreal narrative about spiritual death and rebirth. Amber plays a lost and lonely searcher. David plays a yōkai, a shapeshifting undead spirit from Japanese folklore. Nat plays a truck driver as well as a newborn child. Amber and Haley also feature as girls from the British Midlands, as well as sister Fates in an unindividuated dyad.
The film features several recordings and alternate versions of songs from Swing Lo Magellan including "Offspring Are Blank", "About to Die", "Gun Has No Trigger", "See What She Seeing", "The Socialites" and "Just From Chevron" in addition to other new and unreleased music from the album sessions.
