Rustin Man

Announces new album Drift Code for Feb 1st 2019

Watch video for new track ‘Vanishing Heart’ here

Rustin Man aka Paul Webb has announced his return. Webb, formerly the bass player in Talk Talk, will release his new album Drift Code on February 1st 2019 via Domino.

Webb has released one record under the moniker Rustin Man so far, the superb Out Of Season in 2002 - a collaboration with Beth Gibbons of Portishead. He has been working on the follow-up ever since, recording it in his home, a converted barn, in an Essex field three miles from the nearest village, an extraordinary building as much Old Curiosity Shop as modern living space. Creating that, and raising two daughters with his wife Sam, was happening alongside the making of Drift Code.

The long-awaited album has a warm, wise kind of euphoria to it, coupled with an acute sense of storytelling and surreality. Additionally, Rustin Man has shared the opening song, ‘Vanishing Heart’, from Drift Code.

Stream ‘Vanishing Heart’ here.

Webb, who for the first time has written songs specifically for his own voice, turns out to be a gifted character actor, adopting various vocal roles across the songs. In ‘Vanishing Heart’, he is someone liberated from a loveless relationship: “At last I’ve found more warmth to feeling / It feels so good to be alive”.

As you might expect from someone of Webb’s pedigree, Drift Code is a deep, detailed work. The passage of time, the living space full of art, treasured objects and junk, the years spent listening to film music and ‘40s standards are all audible. But there’s a surprising spontaneity to it too. Though he did much of it alone, Webb’s recording technique made the music feel as if it has been recorded by a group of musicians playing in the same room. Raw demos written on a Dictaphone provided the basis for tracks begun with drums played by Webb’s former Talk Talk and O’rang colleague Lee Harris. Then, one instrument at a time, Webb created arrangements from multiple takes, each one recorded with six microphones positioned at different distances from the instrument. This way he could place each instrument in a different part of an imagined room. When he had finished all the guitars, he picked up a bass and went back to song number one. When he’d got all the bass lines, he moved on to keyboards. This approach means that Drift Code’s songs have matured, in a unique way.

“Through the necessity of recording over a long period of time, the album has a kind of unfixed or uprooted quality. As if the songs belong nowhere so hopefully belong everywhere” adds Webb. This echoes the haunted sound found on Out Of Season, which may become a Rustin Man trademark, the sound of a semi-opaque window onto a real or imagined past, of time trapped in amber. No surprise, considering there’s a decade and a half of its creator’s life inside these songs, time spent reaching out for something ungraspable.

“I called the album Drift Code as it’s an oxymoron, a code is something fixed, but our instinct is to wander, to drift. I like the idea that life is a puzzle that can’t be solved because the answer is always changing.”

Panda Bear | 11/08/18

Image: Panda Bear Buoys launch shot

Noah Lennox's sixth solo album as Panda Bear is Buoys, due out February 8th, 2019 on Domino.

The first song to be released from Buoys is “Dolphin”: Lennox’s bright, sincere voice front and center, with miles of space surrounding it, a guitar and some textured samples fleshing out the dubby sparseness and undercurrent of speaker-limit-pushing sub-bass low-end.

Buoys was co-produced and co-mixed by collaborator Rusty Santos in Lennox’s adopted home of Lisbon, Portugal. Lennox and Santos last collaborated on the landmark Panda Bear album Person Pitch, which had its 10-year anniversary last year.

Animated by their ongoing interest in contemporary music production techniques, Lennox and Santos envisioned something that would “feel familiar to a young person’s ears.” However, Buoys retains a deep layer of experimentation coursing through the hyper-modern production – a hallmark of Panda Bear releases that will feel intimately familiar to fans of Lennox’s decade-plus body of work.

Alongside Santos, Buoys also features collaborators in Chilean DJ/vocalist Lizz and Portuguese musician Dino D'Santiago, both artists who came to Lennox via Santos’ recent trap and reggaeton production work; the former contributes arrangements throughout the album including “Dolphin,” and both lend their vocals to “Inner Monologue."

Buoys is the first Panda Bear release since 2018's vinyl-only EP A Day With the Homies, and the follow-up to 2015's kaleidoscopic full-length Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper. "The last three records felt like a chapter to me, and this feels like the beginning of something new," says Lennox whilst surveying how Buoys relates to the estimable Panda Bear catalogue. Indeed, the forthcoming Buoys is full of fresh ideas from one of modern music's most fascinating, innovative, and emotionally generous artists

Buoys will be available on CD, LP, and Limited Edition LP, and digitally on February 8, 2019. The CD and Limited Edition LP along with a limited edition T-shirt are available to pre-order via the Animal Collective webstore. Buoys artwork was created by Danny Perez, with photography by Fernanda Pereira, and with additional design by Rob Carmichael, SEEN.

Cat Power, the vocalist, songwriter, musician, and producer Chan Marshall, will release her new album Wanderer on October 5th 2018, via Domino.

Produced in its entirety by Marshall, Wanderer includes appearances by longtime friends and compatriots, as well as guest vocals courtesy of friend and recent tour-mate Lana Del Rey. Wanderer’s 11 tracks encompass “my journey so far,” says Marshall. “The course my life has taken in this journey - going from town to town, with my guitar, telling my tale; with reverence to the people who did this generations before me. Folk singers, blues singers, and everything in between.

They were all wanderers, and I am lucky to be among them.”

Animal Collective | 07/16/18

Image: Animal Collective - Tangerine Reef album cover 72dpi

Tangerine Reef is a full-length audiovisual album by Animal Collective (Avey Tare, Deakin and Geologist), in collaboration with Coral Morphologic, to commemorate the 2018 International Year of the Reef. Tangerine Reef is a visual tone poem consisting of time-lapse and slow pans across surreal aquascapes of naturally fluorescent coral and cameos by alien-like reef creatures (note: no CGI or artificial enhancement was used in this film). Tangerine Reef is the sight and sound of a literal underwater collective of animals.

Tangerine Reef will be released on streaming audio services, CD, and 2xLP on August 17, 2018. The full-length film will be released on the same date at the band’s website A limited edition color 2xLP is available to pre-order now from the Animal Collective Domino Mart store.

Pre-order here.

Watch the music video directed by John McSwain and Coral Morphologic for “Hair Cutter” exclusively on Apple Music HERE.

Coral Morphologic is an art-science duo formed by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay in 2007 in Miami. Pioneers of avant-garde coral macro-videography, their work has been featured on the National Geographic Channel, the BBC, as well as the cover of Vice Magazine corresponding to their 2015 documentary ‘Coral City’. They are currently working under a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant to study a population of unusually resilient 'super corals' that Coral Morphologic discovered colonizing the submerged urban edge of the highway connecting Miami to Miami Beach.

Coral Morphologic first met Animal Collective after a Miami screening of the band’s first visual album Oddsac in 2010 by giving Deakin a DVD-R of their first coral film demos. After hitting it off over a mutual love for underwater exploration, subsequent collaborations include Geologist’s soundtracking of Coral Morphologic’s short film ‘Man O War’ in 2011, and has continued through two dive trips; one doomed by Hurricane Irene in the Turks and Caicos and the second to the United States’ northernmost coral reef, the Flower Garden Banks. In 2017, the Borscht Film Festival commissioned Coral Orgy, a collaborative site-specific performance by Animal Collective and Coral Morphologic ‘celebrating the cosmic synchronicity of sex on the reef’ in the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center on Miami Beach. The success of this performance ultimately led to this studio recording of Tangerine Reef. Animal Collective also performed this material live at David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption earlier this spring at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, NY.

Animal Collective walks the walk when it comes to ocean conservation, having previously worked on projects supporting marine protection areas and shark conservation. Geologist (Brian Weitz) has a masters degree in environmental policy from Columbia University with a focus on the marine environment. As an undergraduate, he spent a semester working at the infamous Biosphere 2 Center in Arizona, assisting on some of the first CO2 acidification studies on coral growth inside its captive ‘ocean.’ Following his masters degree, he had a marine policy fellowship with the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Fisheries, and Coast Guard. Deakin (Josh Dibb) is also a passionate scuba diver who has been diving throughout the world. He and Weitz have taken at least one scuba trip together every year since 2005 and have directly witnessed the destruction of the world’s coral reefs by bleaching events, fishing trawlers, and dynamite fishing. Most recently, Avey Tare (Dave Portner) asked Colin to write and record the opening monologue to 'Coral Lords' on his last solo album 'Eucalyptus'. The band also participated in VICELAND’s 2017 documentary miniseries Earthworks, which led to the subsequent release of 2017’s “Meeting of the Waters EP.”

Image: Consolation EP

Today Protomartyr announce a new release called Consolation E.P., which they recorded in part with friend Kelley Deal and will be released June 15th via Domino. Two of the four songs feature Deal on vocals alongside singer Joe Casey, including ‘Wheel of Fortune’, which receives a video today directed by Yoonha Park (who directed the band's video for ‘Don't Go To Anacita’).  The EP was recorded by Deal's R.Ring bandmate Mike Montgomery.

Joe Casey and Kelley Deal had this to say of the collaboration and EP:

“Early 2017 proved to be a productive time for the band. We were writing songs right up to recording Relatives In Descent and wanted to keep that momentum going right after. Making 2015's split single "A Half Of Seven" with R. Ring was one of our favorite recording experiences, so the decision to head down to Dayton, Kentucky and spend a weekend in May recording the four songs that became the Consolation E.P. was an easy one.” Joe Casey

“For Mike and I, working on this EP with Protomartyr was a re-kindling of the tender spark that was struck upon our first encounter with them years ago in Texas. They were graciously tolerant and receptive to my production ideas on the songs and the project quickly grew beyond our private orb. We have cello from Lori Goldston, viola from Jocelyn Hach and even bass clarinet from Evan Ziporyn, and I do some singing with Joe. There's a lot of trust involved when an artist places their songs in your hands, and we were very mindful of that while intentionally trying to take the songs in new directions. Candyland in Dayton, KY is home-base for R.Ring recording, and it's close enough that the Proto-men could make it down to lay the tracks down. This is the second project like this we've done with them, so we're ready to flip the tables and have them produce and record some of our songs!” Kelley Deal

2. Same Face In A Different Mirror
3. Wheel of Fortune (feat. Kelley Deal)
4. You Always Win (feat. Kelley Deal)

Domino is very proud to mark the return of Jon Hopkins and his new album, Singularity, his first since 2013’s breakthrough, Immunity. Singularity is due for release on 4th May 2018. Along with news of Singularity, Hopkins has shared ‘Emerald Rush’ the first track to be released from the album. Listen to the track and watch the animated video, directed by Robert Hunter & Elliot Dear.

Watch the video for ‘Emerald Rush’ below. Listen to ‘Emerald Rush’ on streaming services HERE.

In addition to news of Singularity, Hopkins has announced a run of live dates across the UK & Europe with US dates to be announced shortly. He will also be making a number of festival appearances in 2018.

Singularity begins and ends on the same note: a universe beginning, expanding, and contracting towards the same infinitesimal point. Where Immunity – his hypnotic breakthrough LP – charted the dark alternative reality of an epic night out, Singularity explores the dissonance between dystopian urbanity and the green forest. It is a journey that returns to where it began – from the opening note of foreboding to the final sound of acceptance.

Shaped by his experiences with meditation and trance states, the album flows seamlessly from rugged techno to transcendent choral music, from solo acoustic piano to psychedelic ambient. Its epic musical palette is visceral and emotionally honest: with a destructive opener full of industrial electronics and sonic claustrophobia and a redemptive, pure end on solo piano.

Exploring the connectivity of the mind, sonics and the natural world, Singularity reflects the different psychological states Hopkins experienced while writing and recording. It is a transformative trip of defiance from his initial sense of frustration at the state of the contemporary world to the ultimate conclusion that a true sense of peace and belonging can only come from nature.

Singularity is intended to be listened to in one sitting, as a complete body of work.

Alexis Taylor | 02/22/18

Beautiful Thing, the forthcoming solo album from Alexis Taylor will be released on April 20th via Domino. It is a very new, very individualist and – yes – very beautiful reflection of a life that's changed immeasurably since Alexis first started out in music. This is a musician, writer and singer who has carved his own unique path through the music of the 21st century, completely avoiding getting trapped along the way in dumb oppositions of pop vs avant-garde, dancefloor vs intellect, retro vs modernist and so on. He has worked with living legends from major pop stars to free improvisors in the furthest left field, played huge arenas and tiny clubs without ever privileging one over the other, and through all of it, never stopped listening and learning. All of this accumulated experience is put to work on Beautiful Thing in pursuit of something subtle and elusive but ultimately quite profound and beautifully human.

Taylor’s fourth album also represents the first time Alexis has made a solo album with a producer, that producer being Tim Goldsworthy, co-founder of Mo Wax and DFA Recordings and member of UNKLE.

Today, Alexis is pleased to share the video for the album’s title track and the track that kick-started the recording process with Goldsworthy. With ‘Beautiful Thing’, Alexis combines experimental, clattering noises with crazed, disco lavishness and bug-eyed acid house momentum to create something giddy and glorious. The video, directed by Edwin Burdis, is a suitably compelling counterpart.

The upcoming record is a bold and confident step forward for Alexis both sonically and in terms of his songwriting abilities. It has electronic thrills, dark spaces, memories of dancefloors, heartfelt writing; it's composed, it's improvised, it's accidental, it's strange, but it's also very immediate. It is a beautiful thing itself:  a moving, modern and unique sounding long-player, to get lost in on repeated deep listens.

Beautiful Thing Tracklisting:

01. Dreaming Another Life
02. Beautiful Thing
03. Deep Cut
04. Roll on Blank Tapes
05. Suspicious of Me
06. A Hit Song
07. Oh Baby
08. There’s Nothing To Hide
09. I Feel You
10. Out of Time

Sorry | 02/22/18

Sorry are a new London band centred around Asha Lorenz & Louis O'Bryen, two 19-year-old childhood best friends, who along with Lincoln Barrett (drums) and Campbell Baum (bass) have been playing on London's underground circuit since 2015. '2 Down 2 Dance' is their second official release for Domino, produced by Oli Barton-Wood (Alaskalaska, HMLTD), featuring Asha and Louis’ twisted twin vocals punctuating a typically catchy chorus laden with grungy guitars and surging beats. Sorry have also revealed '2 Down 2 Dance's video today, directed by Asha and frequent collaborator Flo Webb, featuring a delicate dance routine performed by a pair of fey ballet artists, contrasting with the track’s gnarled riffs.

"Ballet dancers can seem so graceful and shy when they move, you are content to just watch as they strive for perfection. We hope the song and video go hand in hand mirroring both beauty and subtle sadness in their movements." – Asha Lorenz

The band will celebrate the launch of ‘2 Down 2 Dance’ with a special show at London’s Whirled Cinema on 22 March.

Sorry’s 2017 debut single ‘Wished’ / ‘Lies’ was championed by The FADER (‘U.K. artists you need to listen to in 2018’), NME (‘The NME 100’), DIY (‘Class Of 2018’), Dork (‘New bands of 2018’), Loud And Quiet, DAZED, Noisey, Another Man, The Line Of Best Fit, and many more. Recorded by Sean Oakley (Rick Rubin, Frank Ocean) and mixed by Andrew Savours (My Bloody Valentine), ‘Wished’ / ‘Lies’ provided an enticing first glimpse of the band's effortlessly emotive songwriting and command of atmosphere. The single followed the self-release of Home Demo(ns) Vol. 1, an eclectic, home-spun 13 track mixtape accompanied by Asha and friend Flo Webb’s intense, vivid short films.

The band have already earned their stripes on the live circuit, providing visceral performances while touring with Pixx, Shame, Childhood, Thurston Moore, The Big Moon, Alvvays and Dream Wife, with a full run of dates joining Sunflower Bean in March and April about to begin.

2 Down 2 Dance Tracklisting:

A. 2 Down 2 Dance
B. Harmless

Middle Kids | 02/01/18

Australian trio Middle Kids announce their eagerly-awaited debut album, Lost Friends, out May 4, 2018 on Domino.

On Lost Friends, Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz bring back their knack for haunting hooks, lyrical poignancy and irresistible indie rock appeal that critics praised in their self-titled first EP, released in March 2016. This radiant collection of new songs conjures melodic nostalgia for some of songwriting's very best, rich in heartfelt build and beautiful simplicity. Take new song "Mistake" as evidence – the first single from the album, released today. Watch the video below:

Middle Kids made a powerful debut last year with the release of their internationally acclaimed self-titled EP, featuring hit singles “Edge of Town” and “Your Love." The band dazzled at several SXSW showcases, sold-out Baby’s All Right in New York City, performed sessions for KCRW, KEXP and Sirius XMU and made their television debut on Conan. In addition to their headlining successes, Middle Kids supported legendary acts like Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs. They’ll kick off an extensive U.S. tour this June, including festival plays at Governors Ball in New York City and Firefly Music Festival in Dover. The full run is detailed below, with all tickets going on sale this Friday, February 2nd.

The new album, Lost Friends, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. The songs’ edges are jagged, the production clean, stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch. Middle Kids craft classic hooks and riffs that tangle up in your brain like taffy and choruses that linger long after the song has faded. And they’ve bonded over a greater sense of what their music should accomplish.

“In a time where a lot of division is growing, we want to be part of the conversation that unites people around certain ideals that are universal, like hope and love,” says Hannah Joy. “That’s so much a thread throughout this album: Even though things are tough, it’s worth believing in something good and in the idea that we can heal. And in some ways, I wanted the music to be beautiful and a respite from what’s going on.”

Lost Friends Tracklisting:

01. Bought It
02. Mistake
03. Edge of Town
04. Maryland
05. On My Knees
06. Don't Be Hiding

Austra | 12/18/17

In January of this year, Austra released Future Politics, the critically lauded fourth album from the Canadian synth-pop group. Before the year is out, Austra have one more track to share, ‘Change The Paradigm’, a Future Politics B-side.

Singer Katie Stelmanis on ‘Change The Paradigm’:

“I wish "Change the Paradigm" had made it onto the record because it directly embodies what I wanted to express on "Future Politics" - that the most powerful tool we possess for creating a better world is our own imagination. "Future Politics" was written in a much different climate than what we have today. It's been difficult to stay positive, but for me the possibility of what lies ahead is not only a weapon of potential, but a source of comfort and faith. We have to believe in the future and our own power to invent it now more than ever!”

To wrap up the year, Austra are playing one final show in their hometown Toronto at the Velvet Underground this Thursday, December 14th. Tickets are on sale and available for purchase here.

To revisit Future Politics, listen via DSPs here.

Sorry are a new London band centred around Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Bryen, two 19 year-old childhood best friends. Along with Lincoln Barrett (drums) and Campbell Baum (bass) Sorry have been making a name for themselves on London's underground circuit since 2015.

Although starting life with a conventional rock band set up, Sorry’s tastes are wide-ranging and reflect their age and omnivorous YouTube-era musical upbringing where rock, hip hop, noise, electronic soundscapes, grime and folk all sit side-by-side and without confusion. Accordingly, all these influences and more form the band's unique nascent musical universe - a bold, ambitious and at times irreverent canvas onto which the symbiotic intensity of Lorenz’s and O'Bryen's emotional and hyper-melodic songwriting is projected.

‘Wished’ is their debut studio recording and follows the recent self-release of Home Demo(ns) Vol. 1, an eclectic, homespun 13 track audio/visual mixtape. Recorded by Sean Oakley (Rick Rubin, Frank Ocean) and mixed by Andrew Savours (My Bloody Valentine), it is an enticing first document of the band's effortlessly emotive songwriting and command of atmosphere which will be familiar to anyone who has seen their visceral live shows so far, as well as a glimpse at in-studio production possibilities to be explored in their future work.

Wished’ will also be accompanied by a B-side, ‘Lies’ - set to arrive later this month.
Both tracks will be packaged together on Sorry’s very first 7” vinyl release on Domino.

Pre-order Wished/Lies now.

Patrick Watson | 11/17/17

Image: Patrick Watson Broken

Patrick Watson is proud to share "Broken", a brand new single and video, premiering today via NPR. The track was recorded at Studio PM in Montreal last month.

"This is a song I just felt like sharing before the next record. Dedicated to the storms we went through.” - Patrick Watson

Of the video, recently shot in Montreal, director Pedro Pires says: “It was a real pleasure to work with Patrick to create this video. We started with simple intuitive ideas such as characters fleeing or running away in fast moving vehicles. I then proposed to use reflections and flares to fragment the light to reveal a more impressionist moody state of mind of these various “broken” characters."

Patrick has been busy with various projects since the 2015 release of his critically acclaimed fifth album, Love Songs for Robots. He performed after U2’s Bono at the Canada Day concert last July in Ottawa, was part of the cast as a performer for the circus show Rêveurs définitifs, played the Montreal Symphonique outdoor concert on the Mount-Royal to celebrate the city’s 375th anniversary, embarked on the Canadian C3 boat for a 2 week run to raise awareness on diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, youth engagement and the environment, played special concerts with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and finally, performed last week at the Bell Center for Tower of Songs, a tribute concert to Leonard Cohen in Montreal with Sting, Lana Del Rey, Elvis Costello, Adam Cohen, Coeur de Pirate and more. Patrick and his band are currently recording their next album, set to be released sometime in 2018.

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”
