Australian trio Middle Kids announce their eagerly-awaited debut album, Lost Friends, out May 4, 2018 on Domino.

On Lost Friends, Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz bring back their knack for haunting hooks, lyrical poignancy and irresistible indie rock appeal that critics praised in their self-titled first EP, released in March 2016. This radiant collection of new songs conjures melodic nostalgia for some of songwriting's very best, rich in heartfelt build and beautiful simplicity. Take new song "Mistake" as evidence – the first single from the album, released today. Watch the video below:

Middle Kids made a powerful debut last year with the release of their internationally acclaimed self-titled EP, featuring hit singles “Edge of Town” and “Your Love." The band dazzled at several SXSW showcases, sold-out Baby’s All Right in New York City, performed sessions for KCRW, KEXP and Sirius XMU and made their television debut on Conan. In addition to their headlining successes, Middle Kids supported legendary acts like Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs. They’ll kick off an extensive U.S. tour this June, including festival plays at Governors Ball in New York City and Firefly Music Festival in Dover. The full run is detailed below, with all tickets going on sale this Friday, February 2nd.

The new album, Lost Friends, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. The songs’ edges are jagged, the production clean, stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch. Middle Kids craft classic hooks and riffs that tangle up in your brain like taffy and choruses that linger long after the song has faded. And they’ve bonded over a greater sense of what their music should accomplish.

“In a time where a lot of division is growing, we want to be part of the conversation that unites people around certain ideals that are universal, like hope and love,” says Hannah Joy. “That’s so much a thread throughout this album: Even though things are tough, it’s worth believing in something good and in the idea that we can heal. And in some ways, I wanted the music to be beautiful and a respite from what’s going on.”

AUSTRA SHARE "FUTURE POLITICS" B-SIDE "CHANGE THE PARADIGM"

Austra | 12/18/17

_

In January of this year, Austra released Future Politics, the critically lauded fourth album from the Canadian synth-pop group. Before the year is out, Austra have one more track to share, ‘Change The Paradigm’, a Future Politics B-side.

Singer Katie Stelmanis on ‘Change The Paradigm’:

“I wish "Change the Paradigm" had made it onto the record because it directly embodies what I wanted to express on "Future Politics" - that the most powerful tool we possess for creating a better world is our own imagination. "Future Politics" was written in a much different climate than what we have today. It's been difficult to stay positive, but for me the possibility of what lies ahead is not only a weapon of potential, but a source of comfort and faith. We have to believe in the future and our own power to invent it now more than ever!”

To wrap up the year, Austra are playing one final show in their hometown Toronto at the Velvet Underground this Thursday, December 14th. Tickets are on sale and available for purchase here.

To revisit Future Politics, listen via DSPs here.

SORRY ANNOUNCE DEBUT SINGLE 'WISHED' ON DOMINO; 7" COMING LATER THIS YEAR

12/04/17

Image: Sorry

_

Sorry are a new London band centred around Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Bryen, two 19 year-old childhood best friends. Along with Lincoln Barrett (drums) and Campbell Baum (bass) Sorry have been making a name for themselves on London's underground circuit since 2015.

Although starting life with a conventional rock band set up, Sorry’s tastes are wide-ranging and reflect their age and omnivorous YouTube-era musical upbringing where rock, hip hop, noise, electronic soundscapes, grime and folk all sit side-by-side and without confusion. Accordingly, all these influences and more form the band's unique nascent musical universe - a bold, ambitious and at times irreverent canvas onto which the symbiotic intensity of Lorenz’s and O'Bryen's emotional and hyper-melodic songwriting is projected.

‘Wished’ is their debut studio recording and follows the recent self-release of Home Demo(ns) Vol. 1, an eclectic, homespun 13 track audio/visual mixtape. Recorded by Sean Oakley (Rick Rubin, Frank Ocean) and mixed by Andrew Savours (My Bloody Valentine), it is an enticing first document of the band's effortlessly emotive songwriting and command of atmosphere which will be familiar to anyone who has seen their visceral live shows so far, as well as a glimpse at in-studio production possibilities to be explored in their future work.

Wished’ will also be accompanied by a B-side, ‘Lies’ - set to arrive later this month.
Both tracks will be packaged together on Sorry’s very first 7” vinyl release on Domino.

Pre-order Wished/Lies now.

PATRICK WATSON UNVEILS 'BROKEN', A BRAND NEW SINGLE PREMIERED VIA NPR

Patrick Watson | 11/17/17

Patrick Watson is proud to share "Broken", a brand new single and video, premiering today via NPR. The track was recorded at Studio PM in Montreal last month.

"This is a song I just felt like sharing before the next record. Dedicated to the storms we went through.” - Patrick Watson

Of the video, recently shot in Montreal, director Pedro Pires says: “It was a real pleasure to work with Patrick to create this video. We started with simple intuitive ideas such as characters fleeing or running away in fast moving vehicles. I then proposed to use reflections and flares to fragment the light to reveal a more impressionist moody state of mind of these various “broken” characters."

Patrick has been busy with various projects since the 2015 release of his critically acclaimed fifth album, Love Songs for Robots. He performed after U2’s Bono at the Canada Day concert last July in Ottawa, was part of the cast as a performer for the circus show Rêveurs définitifs, played the Montreal Symphonique outdoor concert on the Mount-Royal to celebrate the city’s 375th anniversary, embarked on the Canadian C3 boat for a 2 week run to raise awareness on diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, youth engagement and the environment, played special concerts with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and finally, performed last week at the Bell Center for Tower of Songs, a tribute concert to Leonard Cohen in Montreal with Sting, Lana Del Rey, Elvis Costello, Adam Cohen, Coeur de Pirate and more. Patrick and his band are currently recording their next album, set to be released sometime in 2018.

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”

HOOKWORMS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM MICROSHIFT, OUT FEBRUARY 2ND 2018

Hookworms | 11/16/17

Image: Hookworms

_

Domino is very proud to present Microshift, the third album from Hookworms, due for release on February 2nd 2018. With the announcement of Microshift, the band share new track, Negative Space.

Microshift is the Leeds band's first new work in over 3 years and marks a seismic shift in their sound, dynamic, songwriting and production, whilst still bearing all the ferocious energy, intricate musicianship and bruised but beautiful song-craft of the previous releases which have quietly made them one of the UK's most revered young bands.

This is the band's third studio album technically but arguably the first in which the studio has been central to its creation. Pearl Mystic and second LP, The Hum were heavily informed by the band's live sound, Microshift on the other hand came to life in the studio, formed out of loops, modular synthesizer sequences, drum machines, homemade samples etc. which were jammed around and layered until the songs began to emerge. The band have also opened their writing to include collaborations with artists such as Richard Formby (on Opener), Christopher Duffin (on Boxing Day) and Alice Merida Richards (on Each Time We Pass).

Radiant, immersive and teeming with light, but still heavy and forceful - the music on Microshift acts as a very deliberate counter to some of the difficult topics the album's lyrics address. Death, disease, heartbreak, body image and even natural disaster are all present here but the overall effect these songs achieve is euphoric catharsis.

The album was written and recorded in full following a complete rebuild of the band’s Suburban Home Studio after the River Aire floods in Leeds in the winter of 2015 which devastated the studio. The band had an incredible response to a GoFundMe campaign and the subsequent help of volunteers over several months to rebuild the studio from nothing is a huge part of the band’s continued existence. Striving through the toughness, it is perhaps no surprise that the record is one of both defiance and darkness. “All of our records are to an extent about mental health,” comments MJ. “Largely this is an album about loss but also about maturing, accepting your flaws and the transience of intimacy”.

Hookworms are MJ, MB, JW, JN & EO.

Microshift Tracklisting:

01. Negative Space
02. Static Resistance
03. Ullswater

PORCHES ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'THE HOUSE'; SHARE VIDEO FOR 'FIND ME'

Porches | 10/24/17

The House, the third full-length album from New York musician Porches, will arrive on January 19, 2018. The 14-song affair features contributions from (Sandy) Alex G, Dev Hynes, Okay Kaya, Maya Laner (True Blue), Bryndon Cook (Starchild & The New Romantic), Cameron Wisch (Cende), and Aaron Maine’s own father Peter Maine.

Today, The House offers the new single Find Me, an icy track with lyrics touching on anxiety, escape and isolation. Watch the video, co-directed by Maine and Nick Harwood now.

Fans were offered a glimpse into The House recently, with the release of Country – a melancholic, tender ballad showcasing Maine’s confident songwriting. The accompanying video, shot in upstate New York and co-directed again by Maine & Harwood,

The House was written and recorded over an 18-month stretch, immediately following the completion of Porches’ breakthrough record Pool. Taking a diary-like approach, Aaron documents a period of time through the 14 gorgeous songs on this record.

Says Aaron Maine, on The House:

“The House is a diary. The House began immediately with a sense of urgency. A different kind of urgency than I had experienced previously when writing songs. I wasn't sure exactly what this meant while it was happening, but it felt necessary to embrace it.

The songwriting became an exercise in documenting my immediate experiences, which writing has always been for me to a certain extent, but something particular was compelling me to try to portray these moments in a more linear way. Writing this record was a form of meditation, an escape, a routine - selfish at times, as it became an excuse to avoid my immediate surroundings.

Half the time, I still won't understand what was going on in my head when I listen to a song I wrote - even months later - but things seemed to be changing fast, and writing these kind of vignettes was soothing to me, a way to kind of slow down time. I don't think I was necessarily working through anything during the process of writing, if anything maybe avoiding that, but the album has become something different to me in hindsight: a way to look back at a time in my life and see my guts at play. To try and understand what was going through my head as I slid these songs out is an interesting experience, sometimes exciting, sometimes embarrassing, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes still totally confusing. I am happy to have these 14 songs in one place to look back on and stumble through and hopefully learn something from, and I am excited to share them with you.”

PORCHES SHARE NEW MUSIC, WATCH THE VIDEO FOR 'COUNTRY' NOW

Porches | 10/19/17

Image: Porches Country

_

Porches a.k.a. Aaron Maine returns with new song Country. The song features backing vocals by Dev Hynes and Bryndon Cook.

The accompanying video was co-directed by Maine and Nick Harwood (producer on Blood Orange’s Augustine and Sandra’s Smile), and was shot in and around Maine’s childhood stomping grounds in upstate New York.

Maine wrote this note to accompany the music:

i am happy to share this new song with you
it's the last song i wrote for my new album
in the context of the record it acts as a departure as well as an arrival
here is a poem i wrote about what the song means:

mini reckoning
Like flopping onto bed after first kiss high school
I left her apartment and made sure to keep the sleep on me all the way home
Rolled down the window across the bridge
And filled up my lungs
She told me about this saying about breaking the water to get somewhere
and i imagined what it would be like to swim together
I felt soft and dumb like a country song

Maine has spent the past year working on the follow-up to his 2016 breakthrough record, and Domino debut, Pool. The new song shared today, “Country”, displays the trademark vulnerability of Porches, but shows a maturity and growth – and is a stunning taste of what’s to come from the artist.

PROTOMARTYR SHARE 'DON'T GO TO ANACITA', PREVIEW NEW ALBUM IN DETROIT AND NEW YORK JUKEBOXES

09/26/17

This Friday, Protomartyr release their fourth album, Relatives In Descent. Prior to its release, the band have shared the third single off Relatives, and perhaps one of their most straight-forward and anthemic songs to date. Don't Go To Anacita takes place in a fictional town of singer Joe Casey's invention, a sort of everytown created to catch Casey's ire.

Late last week, CDs of Relatives In Descent were surreptitiously slipped into the jukeboxes of several dive bars in Detroit and New York. People hoping to get a "pre-release stream" of the album are encouraged to head to The Levee and Old Stanley's in Brooklyn, Bumbo's in Hamtramck, or Bronx Bar in Detroit, and load their laundry quarters into those music-streaming machines. Below, you can see what this might look like at The Levee.

Also, last Friday marked the band's sold out Detroit record release show, which developed into something of a mini-festival. Onboard the Detroit Princess riverboat, the band were joined by friends METZ, Preoccupations, ADULT., Tyvek, and Matthew Dear, 1500 fans, local DJs and food purveyors, charities, and screenings of films like Captain Ron and Waterworld.

Finally, after a festival performance in the Los Angeles area, the band will embark on a lengthy tour of the US, UK, and EU.

PROTOMARTYR SHARE NEW SONG 'MY CHILDREN'; ANNOUNCE DETROIT RELEASE SHOW, BROOKLYN UNDERPLAY

Protomartyr | 08/15/17

Image: Protomartyr

_

Today, Protomartyr share My Children, the second single off their forthcoming album Relatives In Descent (out 9/29 on Domino). A song about legacy, about what we pass on to those that come after us, ‘My Children’ is an urgent follow up to the first single, the gloriously epic A Private Understanding.

Protomartyr have announced worldwide tour dates in support of the album, including a hometown album release party on the Detroit Princess, a 4-level historical cruise ship. The party, which will feature performances from Protomartyr, Adult, Metz, Tyvek, and Preoccupations, also includes a scenic cruise. Tickets available here.

Additionally, Protomartyr have announced another New York headline show, at St. Vitus in Brooklyn on Wednesday September 13th. This more intimate affair will give NY fans a chance to see the band before their Music Hall of Williamsburg show on Oct. 28th. Tickets will be on sale Friday, August 18th.

Anxiety about the precarious nature of reality is a recurring thread on Protomartyr's 4th full-length and Domino debut. Though not a concept album, it presents twelve variations on a theme: the unknowable nature of truth, and the existential dread that often accompanies that unknowing. After months of rehearsal, the band decamped to Los Angeles for two weeks in March of 2017, to record with Sonny DiPerri (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors), who co-produced the record and helped capture the band’s long-simmering vision for something more complex, but no less visceral.

Previously shared track "A Private Understanding" is the album's opening statement and a wellspring from which the following eleven songs flow. At once beautiful and brutal, it mutates from drum-led oddity to unlikely anthem, with some of Casey’s most potent lyrical work at its center.

Relatives In Descent Tracklisting:

01. A Private Understanding
02. Here Is The Thing
03. My Children
04. Caitriona

RAMONA GONZALES, JULIA HOLTER, COLE M.G.N & NEDELLE TORRISI RELEASE CHARITY 7" IN MEMORY OF THEIR MUTUAL FRIEND TRAVIS PETERSON

Julia Holter | 08/01/17

Image: Julia Holter Condemnation

_

Condemnation is a 7" single released in memory of film director, musician, and artist Travis Peterson who passed away in December 2016. Peterson was a close friend of all four artists featured on this record: Ramona Gonzalez, Julia Holter, Cole M.G.N and Nedelle Torrisi.

Peterson had collaborated on music videos with Gonzalez, Holter and Torrisi, as well as with Ariel Pink, Glass Candy, Geneva Jacuzzi and many others. The double A side single (also available digitally) is comprised of two different versions of the classic 1993 Depeche Mode original. Depeche Mode was one of Travis' favourite bands.

In addition to his music video work, Peterson directed many short films including Salvation Mountain (which received a Big Sky Award from the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival), Indio, USA, (which received a Student Academy Award nomination when he was a student at AFI Conservatory), and Circus, among others. He also worked for the BBC News as a camera operator and editor. Travis also played music in bands such as MOOG, Pong, and Cherubino.

Holter, Gonzalez, Torrisi and M.G.N said: "Aside from being an authentic and talented artist and collaborator, Travis was a great friend beloved by many in Los Angeles and around the world. Known for his infectious laugh, sense of mischief, and passion for art, music, and architecture, Travis was simply a pleasure to be around. We hope you will check out a link to some of his work."

PROTOMARTYR SIGN TO DOMINO; ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'RELATIVES IN DESCENT'

Protomartyr | 07/10/17

Image: Protomartyr

_

Anxiety about the precarious nature of reality is a recurring thread on Protomartyr's 4th full-length and Domino debut, Relatives In Descent (out September 29th). Though not a concept album, it presents twelve variations on a theme: the unknowable nature of truth, and the existential dread that often accompanies that unknowing. It's no coincidence this missive comes to us at a moment when disinformation and garbled newspeak have become a daily reality. “I used to think that truth was something that existed, that there were certain shared truths, like beauty,” says Protomartyr singer Joe Casey. “Now that’s being eroded. People have never been more skeptical, and there’s no shared reality. Maybe there never was.”

Relatives In Descent offers new layers and new insights, without sanding any of the edges born from their days as a Detroit bar band. Greg Ahee’s guitar still crackles and spits electricity. Casey's voice continues to shift naturally between dead-eyed croon and fevered bark. Drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson remain sharp and propulsive, a rhythm section that’s as agile as it is adventurous. But this is also Protomartyr at their most impressive. After months of rehearsal, the band decamped to Los Angeles for two weeks in March of 2017, to record with Sonny DiPerri (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors), who co-produced the record and helped capture the band’s long-simmering vision for something more complex, but no less visceral.

It all begins with A Private Understanding, pegged as the album's opening statement the second it was finished, and a wellspring from which the following eleven songs flow. At once beautiful and brutal, it mutates from drum-led oddity to unlikely anthem, with some of Casey’s most potent lyrical work at its centre: “Sorrow's the wind blowing through/Truth is hiding in the wire.”

The video, shared today, was inspired by a recent trip to Ireland by Casey, wherein he found himself in a pub one night and saw an older gentleman - bearing a slight resemblance to himself - singing a traditional Irish song to a handful of onlookers. In the video, a man (portrayed by 78-year-old Detroit stand-up comic Marty Smith, an acquaintance of Joe's from his days working the door at a comedy club) sings his torturous tale to a bar of people, many of whom show varying degrees of interest.

Relatives In Descent Tracklisting:

01. A Private Understanding
02. Here Is The Thing
03. My Children

THE KILLS ANNOUNCE 'ECHO HOME: NON-ELECTRIC EP' IN CELEBRATION OF 15TH ANNIVERSARY

The Kills | 05/24/17

Image: Desperado still

_

The Kills – Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince – will release the Echo Home – Non-Electric EP digitally on June 2nd, with a limited edition 10” vinyl release available for pre-order today.

Both the physical and digital versions of the Echo Home – Non-Electric EP will feature audio from a stripped down session the band captured recently at Electric Lady Studios in New York. Alongside “Echo Home”, the EP features Ash & Ice track “That Love”, a cover of Rihanna’s “Desperado” (which the band originally played as part of a Sirius XMU session), and the song “Wait”, off the band’s first ever release, Black Rooster EP, which celebrates it’s 15 year anniversary on May 28th.

The Black Rooster EP was originally released on Dim Mak in 2002 and was the start of what’s been an incredible career for Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince of The Kills.

With five full-length albums (the most recent being 2016’s Ash & Ice), four EPs, a documentary, and countless live shows under their belt, the passion and fire they continue to bring to every recording and performance is extraordinary.

In their 15th year as a band, The Kills have been looking back and celebrating with a string of anniversary shows and retrospective features, and now this re-recording of “Wait”, one of the first Kills songs ever released. Steve Aoki, owner of Dim Mak and another artist who has proven a career with similar staying power, recently had some words to share on the release of Black Rooster:

"Many moons ago, back in 2002, I had to make a decision whether to pursue a Ph.D. Program or continue with my label Dim Mak & after hearing a demo from The Kills and becoming the first American label to release their EP Black Rooster, I knew what path I was going to choose. They took me under their wing and I hit the road with them as their tour manager, merch guy, driver (we all took turns) and label. I’ll never forget that and love Jamie and Alison forever. Thank you for believing in lil me when not many people gave two shits about Dim Mak and what we were doing. Ride or Die.” – STEVE AOKI

Real Estate have shared an immersive new music video for “Stained Glass” – the second video to be released from their latest album In Mind out now. Directed by Craig Allen, the interactive experience allows fans to color and share their own animated kaleidoscope-like video, creating something unique and experimental. Watch the band’s own color creation below and create your own here: stainedglassvideo.com

In addition to the video release, Real Estate has announced a headlining tour this fall. The band’s expansive tour this spring resulted in their biggest shows to date, including sold out stops at D.C.’s 9:30 Club, The Vic Theatre in Chicago, a 2-night stand at NYC’s Brooklyn Steel + more. The fall tour will feature performances at iconic venues such as The Theatre at The Ace Hotel in Los Angeles and First Avenue in Minneapolis. Presale begins on Monday, May 22 with code “STAINEDGLASS”, with tickets officially on sale May 25. See full tour dates below.

Allen says of the video: “We were collectively excited by making a video that the band could create with their fans rather than for them. I've always been excited to find new ways of making content and this video is a fun—dare I say therapeutic—thing to play with, where you actually get to feel like you accomplish something at the end. That's what is exciting to all of us and we're extremely proud of what we've been able to create with the help of the fabulous MediaMonks team.”

A limited edition 7” for “Stained Glass” backed with an exclusive track, the instrumental "Two Part, Part Two”, is also available to purchase now from Real Estate’s store. Much like its video counterpart, each 7” is a one of kind mix of colors.

The band recently performed another In Mind's first single “Darling” on Conan, which has earned widespread praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, the NY Times, SPIN, Vice, Salon + more. Watch the performance and revisit the orignial music video, directed by Weird Days, below.

PETER PERRETT ANNOUNCES DEBUT SOLO ALBUM "HOW THE WEST WAS WON"

Peter Perrett | 05/22/17

Image: Peter P announce shot

Peter Perrett - former frontman of The Only Ones - releases his debut solo album How The West Was Won on June 30th.

Perrett, whose incisive songcraft and sardonic drawl made him one of the most distinctive voices of the Seventies hasn’t released any music for 20 years. Bearing in mind his most famous song began “I always flirt with death” (‘Another Girl, Another Planet’), this is one comeback that nobody saw coming.

In the hands of certain songwriters, a story of resurrection and redemption might ring a little hollow, but when the songwriter is Peter Perrett, the usual rules have never applied.

Perrett makes each song on How The West Was Won sound natural and effortless, as though he were continuing a briefly interrupted conversation rather than picking up the threads of a solo career that faltered two decades ago. He claims to have barely touched a guitar in the decade between The One’s 1996 album Woke Up Sticky and the 2007 reunion of The Only Ones; with Perrett, a hiatus could so easily turn into a hibernation. Yet Perrett’s familiar voice sounds like it simply stepped out of the room for a few minutes and popped back in again.

Backed by his sons - Jamie and Peter Jr. on lead guitar and bass respectively - and produced by Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), Peter’s intuitive feel for words; his flair for idiosyncratic metaphors and his deadpan wit are all still as sharp as ever.

As demonstrated perfectly by the title track and album opener which Perrett shares today. It finds him railing against American imperialism and celebrity culture. The video is directed by Focus Creeps (Arctic Monkeys/King Krule) and features Peter’s band with whom he recorded the album

The songs on How The West Was Won examine complex emotional terrain and extreme human behaviour, shot through as always with wry self-analysis. In a sense the album is a Perrett family affair: there are love songs (‘An Epic Story’, ‘C Voyeurger’) from Peter to his wife of 47 years Zena. On ‘Something In My Brain’, Perrett discusses good choices, bad choices and ultimately the only choices that will guarantee survival. There are also songs where Perrett opens his curtains and stares out into a much-changed world (‘Man Of Extremes’, ‘Sweet Endeavour’).

How The West Was Won finds Perrett with energy in his blood, rediscovering the importance of rock’n’roll. Having turned 65 over the weekend, he has a fire burning inside him again, and a determination not to blow what could be his last chance.

Tracklisting:

  1. How The West Was Won
  2. An Epic Story
  3. Hard To Say No

  5. Living In My Head
