            <title>Two Dancers</title>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; is the second Wild Beasts album. Co-produced by the band and northern enigma Richard Formby in remote Norfolk earlier this year, it follows 2008&amp;rsquo;s widely celebrated debut &lt;em&gt;Limbo, Panto&lt;/em&gt;. The result is a record of tightrope-high drama, put simply, &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; finds the Wild Beasts on fire. &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; is alive with its sense of possibility, a sound that shimmers and sways in the band&amp;rsquo;s own mercurial fashion. Sit back and listen with wonder at the thrill of it all.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; inhabits its own landscape, as Tom Fleming says, it's &quot;a series of scenes&amp;hellip;a big party, the street outside later on, or in a bedroom, or desperately hungry and starving to death on a distant beach.&quot; The words &quot;bedroom,&quot; &quot;desperately&quot; and &quot;party&quot; perfectly capture the&amp;nbsp; energies at work in &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt;. Equal to the euphoria and sense of expectation is a feeling of helplessness. Hedonism can produce a long night of the soul that burns on wired emotions, and on what Fleming calls &quot;meaningless lust.&quot; The album&amp;rsquo;s lead single &quot;Hooting And Howling,&quot; from its title down, captures this perfectly. Consisting of a staring match between guitarist Benny Little and lead vocalist Hayden Thorpe, &quot;Hooting and Howling&quot; is equal parts statement of intent, and relentless eye contact from a priapic state of mind. As with rest of the album, it feels slightly delirious, having turned itself inside out and finding a state of unique musical grace. &lt;br /&gt; &amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; is full of references to the following: booty calls, puckered lips, bodies as perfect machines, and dim-lit streets.&amp;nbsp; Lyrically &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; is equally energetic and ripe. In &quot;All The King&amp;rsquo;s Men&quot; Fleming sings with purposeful intent about &quot;Girls from Rodean, girls from Shipley, from Hounslow, girls from Whitby&quot; as Hayden Thorpe&amp;rsquo;s falsetto soars with palpable anticipation. In this song, as on the whole of the album, Wild Beasts dare you to cut loose and be seduced, but you&amp;rsquo;ll join in on the disorientation along the way.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The album&amp;rsquo;s shorter tracks, the two minutes of &quot;Underbelly&quot; and &quot;When I&amp;rsquo;m Sleepy,&quot; allow delicious moments for pause. &quot;We were trying to come up with a way to describe it,&quot; as Fleming puts it &quot;and the nearest we got is erotic downbeat music.&quot; Both are suggestive and abstract, capturing the fine art of feeling weird by shimmering in a twilight cadence. The band&amp;rsquo;s performances throughout are pure liquid energy. The needlepoint drama is a result of the band eschewing studio hyper gloss by playing together in the room - &amp;ldquo;recorded live, no over thinking&amp;rdquo; explains Thorpe. The sound and sensation of a band, to borrow the lyric of &quot;This Is Our Lot,&quot;&amp;nbsp; 'dancing late / like young reprobates.' &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; And &lt;em&gt;Two Dancers&lt;/em&gt; is indeed a record made by real young men. As Thorpe, owner of one of the most wildly emotive falsettos observes, &quot;It&amp;rsquo;s such a clich&amp;eacute; to be perceived as being different. We&amp;rsquo;re seen as being outsiders, and that makes us close up the ranks even more.&amp;rsquo;&quot; In closing up the ranks Wild Beasts have made a record of earthly pleasures that sounds thrillingly widescreen, open and in awe of life; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possibilities of pleasure.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;In six tumultuous years, Orange Juice, led by Edwyn Collins, blazed a trail of self-reliance with the legendary Postcard label, ran in conjunction with then-manager Alan Horne, and greatly expanded the palette of independent music at the start of the &amp;lsquo;80s with their brand of literate pop songwriting that both pre-saged the coming of The Smiths and kickstarted a renaissance in Scottish pop music that continues to this day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After an embryonic start as the punk-influenced Nu-Sonics, Orange Juice came into being in 1979 as unfashionable pre-Year Zero punk influences such as The Byrds, Chic, Motown and The Velvet Underground began to make their presence known in the band&amp;rsquo;s developing sound. Over the next year, the group recorded four landmark 7&amp;rdquo; singles on Postcard (as well as putting out early releases from Aztec Camera, The Go-Betweens and Josef K). Though each single proved more successful than its predecessor, greater commercial aspirations led the band to sign to Polydor in the midst of making their first album in a prescient deal in which the band retained ownership of their material. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The original lineup abruptly fell apart shortly after the release of the debut album, &lt;em&gt;You Can&amp;rsquo;t Hide Your Love Forever&lt;/em&gt;, and, as quickly, the band&amp;rsquo;s future was decidedly unassured. However, with the addition of Malcolm Ross, formerly of Postcard labelmates Josef K, and Zimbabwe-by-way-of-Glasgow drummer Zeke Manyika, the group proceeded to make their commercial mark with the timeless funk and soul-inflected &lt;em&gt;Rip It Up&lt;/em&gt;, whose title track was to be the group&amp;rsquo;s biggest UK hit, peaking at #8 in February of 1983. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the recording of a follow-up, the group had decided to head in a more rock direction, but creative tensions arose again and the group fell apart during the recording sessions from which the &lt;em&gt;Texas Fever&lt;/em&gt; mini-LP was culled. With Polydor&amp;rsquo;s support of the group withdrawing, Collins, joined in the studio by Manyika, persevered to make the bittersweet swan song album, &lt;em&gt;The Orange Juice&lt;/em&gt;, a collection that telegraphed the group&amp;rsquo;s impending demise amidst some of their finest recordings. Collins made it official in March of 1985 announcing mid-performance at a miner&amp;rsquo;s benefit at the Brixton Academy that it would be Orange Juice&amp;rsquo;s last performance.&lt;/p&gt;

Musically his production work takes influences from UK, Jamaican, US, North African and French music. You sat down at the table in my house and you saw every colour. It&amp;rsquo;s made me much more open-minded than I could&amp;rsquo;ve been. I come from both worlds. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;Mixed Race&lt;em&gt; is a gangster album. I can&amp;rsquo;t do gangsta rap. That&amp;rsquo;s not me. I can&amp;rsquo;t talk about being a bad boy, &amp;lsquo;cos I&amp;rsquo;m not. But I&amp;rsquo;ve been around that. So this is the closest I can get to a gangsta album. Its very gully, as Jamaicans call it... very dark. Tense, street and urban. It&amp;rsquo;s like a movie, almost. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is also the most uptempo album I&amp;rsquo;ve done. I wanted something that could be played in a club...maybe! Which is unusual for me. Because I don&amp;rsquo;t give a shit about clubs. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;Continuing with the Triffids reissue program that we started in 2006 with the release of the band&amp;rsquo;s classic &lt;em&gt;Born Sandy Devotional&lt;/em&gt; album, and which has seen &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;In The Pines&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Black Swan&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Treeless Plain&lt;/em&gt; all remastered and released as deluxe CDs with additional music and sleeve notes, comes the 18 track &lt;em&gt;Wide Open Road - The Best of the Triffids&lt;/em&gt; compilation. This is a tremendous introduction to a band with an impressive body of work. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(words from the sleeve notes by John O Donnell) &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&quot;...Eleven years after his death (in February, 1999), the songs of David McComb and the music made by The Triffids still lives and breathes and resonates. As evidenced here...For me, The Triffids had the perfect arc...They remind me of that great line by Jack Kerouac in &lt;em&gt;On The Road&lt;/em&gt; where he says 'the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centrelight pop and everybody goes &quot;Awww!&quot;'... With The Triffids, the middle of the arc, the blue centrelight pop, where everybody goes &quot;Awww!&quot; is the song &quot;Wide Open Road&quot;, which is why it&amp;rsquo;s right that it&amp;rsquo;s the lead-off and title track of this collection... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But all around and before and after &quot;Wide Open Road&quot; were great moments of wildly varying colour and kind. Forming in Perth, Western Australia in the late 70s, around drummer Alsy McDonald and David McComb on guitars/vocals, the Triffids mutated through a number of different lineups as they released a handful of crude cassette 'albums', compiling more than 80-90 songs. Graduating to vinyl, their 7&quot; singles were naive gems, tracks like &quot;Reverie&quot; and &quot;Spanish Blue&quot; full of pop smarts and sharp lyrics but with a clumsy, awkward charm. &quot;Beautiful Waste&quot; was their first great song. By the time of their debut album &lt;em&gt;Treeless Plain&lt;/em&gt;, they had settled on their lineup of David McComb (vocals/guitar), Alsy McDonald (drums, vocals), Jill Birt (keyboards, vocals), Robert McComb (guitars, violin, vocals), Martyn P Casey (bass) and 'Evil' Graham Lee (pedal and lap steel, guitars, vocals) was to complete the definitive version of the band shortly after &lt;em&gt;Treeless Plain&lt;/em&gt;... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The studio albums and the songs end up being the lasting document and the Triffids stand proud and tall on this measure. Their live shows are simply burnt in my memory, as visceral, brilliant, intelligent, haunting, pretty, dark, petulant, sloppy, irresistible...kind of like 'fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centrelight pop and everybody goes 'Awww!'&quot;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

A faint drone of organ, joined by eerie strings and a cascade of piano that collectively casts a Hitchcock movie shadow before a hushed voice asks, &amp;ldquo;Have you got just a minute? / Are you easily led? / Let me show the backroom / Where I saw the dead / Dancing like children on a midsummer morn / And they asked me to join&amp;rdquo; &amp;ndash; and then the music obliges by with a similar spectral sweep. &amp;lsquo;I Saw the Dead&amp;rsquo; is an introduction to the vivid narratives, gripping poetry and melodic depth of Conor J. O&amp;rsquo;Brien &amp;ndash; or as he likes to call himself and his cohorts, Villagers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the course of 11 varied, subtle, complex and plain gorgeous songs, the Dubliner shows just why he is Domino&amp;rsquo;s latest signing. O&amp;rsquo;Brien namechecks David Axelrod, Jens Lekman, Robert Wyatt and Rufus Wainwright but you could equally add Paddy McAloon, Paul Simon and Randy Newman to the possible roots of this record. &amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Growing up in Dun Laoghaire, a southeast seaside Dublin suburb, O&amp;rsquo;Brien wrote his first song, aged just 12, a week after his older brother lent Conor his acoustic guitar. &amp;ldquo;Bizarrely enough, my first lyric was &amp;ldquo;When I&amp;rsquo;m walking down these streets, I feel like a monkey in the Arctic&amp;rdquo;. I haven&amp;rsquo;t told Domino that yet! The song was called &amp;lsquo;Psychic&amp;rsquo;, which was about being afraid of a psychic friend because he could read your thoughts. Yes, it was a weird one...&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Roald Dahl books, Jim Henson fantasy films (&lt;em&gt;The Dark Crystal&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Labyrinth&lt;/em&gt;) and a passion for model painting fed the teen Conor&amp;rsquo;s imagination, while his first band, formed with three friends from St. Conleth&amp;rsquo;s College in Ballsbridge, Dublin, defined the adult version. The Immediate were loved in Ireland for their whip-smart, literate bursts of melody, and their sole album &lt;em&gt;In Towers and Clouds&lt;/em&gt; was considered the best homegrown debut since U2&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;Boy&lt;/em&gt; back in 1980. But as the accolades escalated, the band shocked everyone by suddenly breaking up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;ldquo;It felt like ending an incredible long-term relationship. I&amp;rsquo;m terrified of bands now, so I do everything myself&amp;rdquo; says O&amp;rsquo;Brien, who created the artwork and played all the instruments on &lt;em&gt;Becoming a Jackal&lt;/em&gt; (except for the strings and French Horn which were arranged by Villagers pianist/organist Cormac Curran).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After choosing the name Villagers - &amp;ldquo;I like the name because it doesn&amp;rsquo;t offend the songs&amp;rdquo; - O&amp;rsquo;Brien released &lt;em&gt;The Hollow Kind&lt;/em&gt; EP in February 2009 and the 7&amp;rdquo; &amp;lsquo;On a Sunlit Stage&amp;rsquo; last October on the Any Other City label, run by Villagers drummer James Byrne. After signing to Domino, &lt;em&gt;Becoming a Jackal&lt;/em&gt; was recorded in Villagers guitarist Tommy McLaughlin&amp;rsquo;s home studio, with Tommy engineering and co-producing alongside Conor. &amp;ldquo;We wanted to make it sound a bit like a Neil Young album, not to dress it up too much, like someone is whispering in your ear, but also to get the epic-ness at times.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From restrained to unleashed, from a whisper to a literal howl, Becoming a Jackal mutates, intrigues and beguiles in equal measure.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;Villagers frontman Conor O'Brien represents the emergence of a great new songwriting talent. Growing up in Dun Laoghaire, a southeast seaside Dublin suburb, O&amp;rsquo;Brien wrote his first song, aged just 12, a week after his older brother lent Conor his acoustic guitar. &amp;ldquo;Bizarrely enough, my first lyric was &amp;ldquo;When I&amp;rsquo;m walking down these streets, I feel like a monkey in the Arctic&amp;rdquo;. I haven&amp;rsquo;t told Domino that yet! The song was called &amp;lsquo;Psychic&amp;rsquo;, which was about being afraid of a psychic friend because he could read your thoughts. Yes, it was a weird one...&amp;rdquo; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Roald Dahl books, Jim Henson fantasy films (&lt;em&gt;The Dark Crystal&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Labyrinth&lt;/em&gt;) and a passion for model painting fed the teen Conor&amp;rsquo;s imagination, while his first band, formed with three friends from St. Conleth&amp;rsquo;s College in Ballsbridge, Dublin, defined the adult version. The Immediate were loved in Ireland for their whip-smart, literate bursts of melody, and their sole album In Towers and Clouds was considered the best homegrown debut since U2&amp;rsquo;s Boy back in 1980. But as the accolades escalated, the band shocked everyone by suddenly breaking up. &amp;ldquo;It felt like ending an incredible long-term relationship. I&amp;rsquo;m terrified of bands now, so I do everything myself&amp;rdquo; says O&amp;rsquo;Brien. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After choosing the name Villagers - &amp;ldquo;I like the name because it doesn&amp;rsquo;t offend the songs&amp;rdquo; - O&amp;rsquo;Brien released &lt;em&gt;The Hollow Kind EP&lt;/em&gt; in February 2009 and the 7&amp;rdquo; &lt;em&gt;On a Sunlit Stage&lt;/em&gt; last October on the Any Other City label, run by Villagers drummer James Byrne. Full of directional shifts in colour and sound the canvas of Insides is stretched into new possibilities by remixers &lt;strong&gt;Tunng&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Geese&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Tom&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt; Middleton&lt;/strong&gt;. Their adventurous treatment of the material is echoed in the sources and free spirit of the two new tracks: &quot;Seven Gulps of Air&quot; and &quot;A Drifting Down.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Seven Gulps of Air&lt;/em&gt; came into being via a commission from designer Christopher Kelly, for his label &lt;em&gt;Theatre De La Mode&lt;/em&gt;&amp;rsquo;s latest fashion film, shown at London Fashion Week. Mutual friend Mike Lindsay, the production and songwriting fulcrum of &lt;strong&gt;Tunng,&lt;/strong&gt; created the rhythmic template of the track, which drew heavily on the collection&amp;rsquo;s African themes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;S&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;even Gulps of Air (with Tunng)&lt;/strong&gt;: the title track configures live handclapping and vocal incantations from Malinese singer Abdallah Ag Housseyni. The result sounds like someone stamping their way down to the centre of the earth, following the voices in their head and the nicest and nastiest of basslines.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;S&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;m&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;all Memory (Tunng remix)&lt;/strong&gt;: Tunng turn Small Memory into a reeling medicine show. Playing around the original&amp;rsquo;s piano line you can hear bottles being uncorked and the loping groove of footsteps swaying, before settling into the sound of the early hours drifting by.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Low Places (Geese remix)&lt;/strong&gt;: a new performance by Geese who treat their violins and violas as hand percussion as much as chamber instruments. The result is the sound of every scrape of the bow and dust of the resin falling in counterpoint to original&amp;rsquo;s eerie melody.&amp;nbsp; The tension of the strings taken to the tightest point of collapse before finding a strange kind of calm.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A Drifting Down&lt;/strong&gt;: reworks &lt;em&gt;Insides&lt;/em&gt;&amp;rsquo; &quot;A Drifting Up&quot; by magnifying its details. Starting around King  Creosote&amp;rsquo;s hums and Emma  Smith&amp;rsquo;s violin phases then dispersing into an electro-acoustic depth of field, shifting around a narcotic moment&amp;rsquo;s pause for thought.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Light In The Veins (Tom Middleton Remodel)&lt;/strong&gt;: Tom Middleton&amp;rsquo;s euphoric take on &quot;Light In The Veins&quot; which manages to replace the blood stream with pure white light, pushing further into hands in the air, blissed out synaesthesia.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <title>ALEX CHILTON - THE SINGER AND THE SONGS (December 28, 1950 – March 17, 2010)</title>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;Alex Chilton was a soul  singer. The music of Alex Chilton and Big Star has a huge emotional depth to it  that has resonated through the years, which is why he had, and still has, a huge  influence on people who form rock&amp;rsquo;n&amp;rsquo;roll bands. Well, the good ones anyway. It&amp;rsquo;s  also why he never sold too many records, because regular folks can&amp;rsquo;t take that  kind of honesty. They prefer the fake to the real and the overdone to the  understated. Alex Chilton was one of the givers. His life was a triumph for art,  truth, singing and rock&amp;rsquo;n&amp;rsquo;roll music. I don&amp;rsquo;t go for that underachiever shit  that the &amp;ldquo;journos&amp;rdquo; always go on about - the guy made three of the greatest  albums of all time!!! What a fucking talent!&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let me tell you my Alex  Chilton story. Indulge me, cos I&amp;rsquo;m a bit choked up here. In 1986 I released a  record by the Replacements, called Boink!, on my label, Glass Records. It was a  mini LP culled from some of their earlier releases but had an unreleased track  called &amp;ldquo;Nowhere Is My Home&amp;rdquo; produced by Alex Chilton, which mightily impressed  Nikki Sudden, who alongside his brother Epic Soundtracks, first turned me on to  Alex&amp;rsquo;s music. Nikki and Epic are sadly no longer with us either. 6 years later I  was working at Creation Records and I met Alex at Victoria Station straight off  the Gatwick Express. Creation brought him over to London to talk about making a record. Me and  Alan McGee took him out for a couple of drinks and had a real nice time. The  next day Alex and myself went up to Glasgow  together on the train for the weekend to record a hastily arranged session for  BBC Radio Scotland with Teenage Fanclub. He  told me some great stories, like taking acid for the first time with Dennis  Wilson, and hanging out at Dennis&amp;rsquo;s place when Manson and &amp;ldquo;all those chicks&amp;rdquo;  were around. I lapped all that stuff up. I love all those stories. He was damn  good company. At the rehearsal for the Radio thing, Alex asked the band to play  &amp;ldquo;Alcoholiday&amp;rdquo;, his favourite song from &amp;ldquo;Bandwagonesque&amp;rdquo;, which he then proceeded  to sing, and yes he knew all the words. Imagine how you&amp;rsquo;d feel if Alex Chilton  sang one of your songs, two feet away from your face. I tell you, walking into  the Griffin, where all the Glasgow bands hung out,  with Alex fuckin&amp;rsquo; Chilton was totally genius. Cries of &amp;ldquo;No way!!&amp;rdquo; could be heard  all the way up past the King&amp;rsquo;s Cafe to &amp;nbsp;Sauchiehall Street. Well, for some reason  or another that record never happened, and I think that it was a great  disappointment to him, as indeed it was to  me.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Alex, it was a pleasure  and a privilege to know you for a brief time. You are the MAN and I remain, your  fan. God bless.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I feel lucky that with  Teenage Fanclub we had the opportunity to work with Alex a few times and through  that to fully realise what an amazing musician he was. I&amp;rsquo;d actually been  reminiscing about working with Alex the day before I found out he&amp;rsquo;d died,  remembering a radio session we recorded in &amp;lsquo;92 where, at his instigation of  course, we worked on an instrumental version of a theme from the overture of  Wagner&amp;rsquo;s Tannhauser. On the day I heard he&amp;rsquo;d died I went to a concert, the  thought of which had prompted my reminiscence, where the Scottish Symphony  Orchestra played the overture of Tannhauser. Of course, in my mind this was a  beautiful little tribute to him, someone for whom the work of Wagner, Eddie  Floyd, and Joe Meek were all part of the same thing. Alex was inspiring to me in  terms of his songwriting, his eclecticism, his not just innovative but also  accomplished musicianship, and all that allied with his disdain for sycophancy  and bullshit. He was a great guy and I always enjoyed his company. &lt;strong&gt;Raymond McGinley&lt;/strong&gt;, Teenage  Fanclub&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was introduced to the  music of Alex Chilton by Brian Taylor, guitarist in the first Pastels lineup.  Brian, it's fair to say was not too impressed by many things, but Alex had found  his favour, and he seemed to love everything from pop soul sides with the Box  Tops through to raw but exciting productions for The Cramps and Tav Falco's  Panther Burns. Me, I really liked Alex's voice and some of his songs; hearing  September Gurls for the first time was unbelievably thrilling. Alex always  seemed like someone who could move easily from era to era - 1960s, 1970s, 1980s.  He was clever enough to keep moving and aware enough to usually have the right  length of hair for the time. Eventually he started turning up in Glasgow thanks to super  enthusiastic fans like Jason from V-Twin, and of course the Teenage Fanclub  connection, which he knew was a good thing. &amp;nbsp;I met him a couple of times and he  seemed kind of there, not there. &amp;nbsp;But somehow I expected this smart traveller to  keep moving; moving through things and around them, to be here for ever or at  least until he was 100. Not to be. &amp;nbsp;It's like the feeling you get from  listening to so many of his lovely, sad  songs. &lt;strong&gt;Stephen  Pastel&lt;/strong&gt;, Glasgow. March  2010&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We were in LA mixing an  album and Alex is passing through town. He has a show at McCabes guitar shop and  invites us down. Alex plays a great set and we hang out afterwards and drink  beer. He tells us that he's going to be playing at a Beach Boys fanclub event  the next evening and that we should &amp;ldquo;really&amp;rdquo; come down as it's going to be &amp;ldquo;very  special&amp;rdquo;.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We make our way to a  small theater in Santa Monic, once inside, us and the fifty other people there  take our seats and watch The Beach Boys Hawaii concert movie along with a load  of outtakes and rare and unseen clips. Next, we are treated to a set of Beach  Boys tunes performed by a band that includes Brian Wilson producer Andy Paley,  who are accompanying a number of guest singers. Alex does a great version of  Solar System. The show builds to a climax and it seems that the night is over  when unexpectedly, Rodney Bingenheimer appears at the front mic and announces  that there is to be one more performance, and at that, Brian Wilson shuffles  onstage and up to the piano. He sits down and self deprecatingly starts to play  &quot;I'm a little teapot&quot; (with the handle and spout arm movements) before launching  into &quot;Do it again&quot; and then &quot;God only knows&quot;. We are at the front of the stage  about five feet away from Brian, gobsmacked. This is his first public  performance in a long time. He's fragile but brilliant. Alex is at the other  side of the stage and looks over at us with an enormous grin on his face. Thanks  for that Alex. What a treat.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Alex Chilton, was a great  singer and performer and a much better songwriter than he would have you  believe. He is man who told Charles Manson where to get off....but that's  another story. &lt;strong&gt;Norman  Blake&lt;/strong&gt;, Teenage  Fanclub&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We did some west coast  dates with Alex in 1988 around the time of High Priest. We were all mightily  impressed at the Chilton Soundcheck, which involved parking his guitar and his  amp on the stage before going straight back out of the venue again in search of  good times. (It was a trick he repeated in London in the nineties, striking terror into  the hearts of his &quot;minders&quot; by disappearing into the Streets of Fear around  King's Cross.)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Then in 92 I ran into him  in New Orleans.  He wasn't supposed to be drinking, but he took me on a 2 night binge that ended  up in a transvestite cowboy bar called &quot;Roundup&quot;. It was only supposed to be a  one night thing, but when I went out around town the next day I found him  banging on the window of a bar that I was passing, beckoning me in for round  two, as it were.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Of course, he was a  proper Southern Gent, courteous and charming and prone to the occasional  &quot;Vietnam moment&quot; where he would sort  of glaze over and start muttering incomprehensibly at some unseen foe for a  second before snapping back into your reality once again. Like a lot of southern  people he had a genuine belief in astrology. Our birthdays were close together  (&quot;December boys got it bad&quot;) and he called me &quot;the Jack of Hearts&quot;. Guess we all  knew who the King was.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In New Orleans we went past  this bar, which he told us was Muddy Waters' club. &quot;I had some of the best  nights of my life in there,&quot; he said. I figured he meant that he'd played some  gigs there. &quot;No,&quot; he replied, &quot;I was the  janitor.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That struck me as typical  of him. He said that he only really rated three or four of his own songs and was  much happier just being a singer, covering other people's stuff. For somebody  who had done so much and meant so much to so many, he seemed almost entirely  uncorrupted by any kind of &quot;ego&quot;. Even after the Big Star revival of the  nineties, he would still regularly turn up and play on old sixties revue  packages in odd places like Canadian leisure  centres.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I never heard him refer  to Jody Stevens as anything other than simply &quot;The Drummer&quot;. Once in London, Joe Foster was  talking to him about the fact that there were Big Star tee shirts on sale; he  was concerned that Alex was getting his fair cut of the proceeds. With  consummate unconcern Alex told him &quot;Aaaah, that was the Drummer's idea.&quot; Case  closed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Alex Chilton was the real  thing. Raised in a house full of music in Memphis, he lived the true and proper rock and  roll life all his life. I'm not sure that we shall ever see his like  again. &lt;strong&gt;Pat  Fish&lt;/strong&gt;, The Jazz  Butcher&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;The following is an edited extract of Matt Thorne's piece for &lt;em&gt;Loops 2&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;'Gigolos Get Lonely Too': Prince, His Prot&amp;eacute;g&amp;eacute;es, Side-Projects and Their Influence (Part One: &amp;rsquo;78-&amp;lsquo;84)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;As with Prince&amp;rsquo;s own releases, the records that his prot&amp;eacute;g&amp;eacute;es and friends have put out over the last thirty years have been of variable quality.&amp;nbsp; This strand of Prince&amp;rsquo;s music is driven by two major motivations: Prince&amp;rsquo;s delight in hiding from public view, and the fact that enjoys being in a studio or on stage over anything else.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; But it&amp;rsquo;s more than a straightforward desire to release as much as possible.&amp;nbsp; In fact, it isn&amp;rsquo;t stretching things too far to see &amp;lsquo;Vanity&amp;rsquo;, &amp;lsquo;Apollonia&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;Sister Fate&amp;rsquo; as Prince&amp;rsquo;s characters, part of the novel he sings about trying to write in the unreleased &amp;lsquo;Moonbeam Levels.&amp;rsquo; Others have suggested it makes more sense to see them as Prince&amp;rsquo;s alter egos, the name &amp;lsquo;Vanity&amp;rsquo; believed to have been inspired by the physical similarity between Denise Matthews and Prince.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the summer of &amp;rsquo;79 Prince took his band of the era to Boulder, Colorado to work on his first planned side-project, a New Wave band named The Rebels.&amp;nbsp; Although the nine Rebels songs are cherished by collectors, it&amp;rsquo;s disappointing the record wasn&amp;rsquo;t released, as just as his recordings as Madhouse reveal Prince the jazz musician, the rock underpinnings of several of Prince&amp;rsquo;s Rebels songs reveal Prince the New Waver but also Prince the rockabilly.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;rsquo;s also the only album Prince has been involved in where he really is just one of the band rather than merely trying to give this impression; from now on he&amp;rsquo;d always remain in command.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instead of The Rebels, Prince&amp;rsquo;s most significant early side-project was the first album by The Time.&amp;nbsp; The six-track album features Prince in deep disguise, co-producing under the pseudonym Jamie Starr. The Time would evolve into a band with a very clear identity, but the project initially grew out of, Lisa Coleman told me, jokes and silliness.&amp;nbsp; She was living with Prince at the time, and her contribution to the album was greater than has previously been acknowledged.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;My room was upstairs, so he would call me down, 'Lisa, would you help me do this string part?&amp;nbsp; What about these lyrics?&amp;nbsp; Can you finish this verse?'&amp;nbsp; He involved me, I punched him in while he was playing the drums, whatever it was.&amp;rdquo; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She wasn&amp;rsquo;t there the night they decided to make Morris Day the front-man, but remembers him as a cute freckle-faced boy with a big &amp;lsquo;fro who would run and get them hamburgers.&amp;nbsp; Lisa says Prince never doubted that Morris would rise to the challenge, although she felt, &amp;ldquo;The guy had had a huge responsibility thrust upon him and what seemed like fun and games at first became a big deal.&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vanity 6, Prince&amp;rsquo;s first female-fronted side-project, was closer to Dirty Prince.&amp;nbsp; The band started out as the Hookers, and very nearly had a lead singer named &amp;lsquo;Vagina&amp;rsquo;, but Vanity 6 were always a pop band.&amp;nbsp; What gives Prince&amp;rsquo;s earliest work much of its charm is his tireless subservience before unkind, promiscuous or uninterested women, and it seems surprising but sweet that when writing his first songs for women to sing he didn&amp;rsquo;t take on the persona of the unavailable lover, but imagined instead a sister to his poor sexually frustrated brothers.&amp;nbsp; The band&amp;rsquo;s most famous song, &amp;lsquo;Nasty Girl,&amp;rsquo; may be less well-known than Prince&amp;rsquo;s greatest hits, but it&amp;rsquo;s among the most influential songs Prince has written. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While working on the Vanity 6 album, Prince had also been preparing The Time&amp;rsquo;s second album, released a fortnight later.&amp;nbsp; Morris Day stands alone on What Time Is It?, checking his watch in front of a wall covered with clocks.&amp;nbsp; The record has more character than its predecessor, and although it is structured similarly, with three long dance tracks and three shorter songs, the lyrics are sharper and less generic, the concept now clearly in focus.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;rsquo;d be the hits from the third Time album that&amp;rsquo;d truly fix the band in the public consciousness, but this is just as good. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prince took these two bands on tour as support when promoting 1999, happy to reveal himself as puppet-master.&amp;nbsp; The friction between the various camps spilt out beyond the shows and Lisa remembers there being no doubt as to who was in charge.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;There were three buses.&amp;nbsp; Our bus had a video-machine on it, and we stopped at a truck stop and the video machine was gone.&amp;nbsp; Me and Dez went onto Vanity 6's bus and Prince was on the bus watching something with Vanity.&amp;nbsp; And we said &amp;lsquo;hey, that's from our bus&amp;rsquo; and he said, 'they're all my buses.&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Almost two years would pass between the second Time album and Prince&amp;rsquo;s next full-length project with a prot&amp;eacute;g&amp;eacute;e, Sheila E&amp;rsquo;s The Glamorous Life (1984).&amp;nbsp; Prince presented Sheila E with songs that he&amp;rsquo;d already recorded, allowing her to replace his scratch vocal and then building up most songs around her percussion.&amp;nbsp; Prince often experiments with techniques and styles in his side-projects that don&amp;rsquo;t reach full fruition in his own work until several years later and the first Sheila E album has less in common with the very mainstream rock record he&amp;rsquo;d just completed than their later collaborations on Sign O&amp;rsquo;The Times and Lovesexy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Time&amp;rsquo;s third album, &amp;lsquo;Ice Cream Castle&amp;rsquo; features the two songs for which the band are now best known, &amp;lsquo;Jungle Love&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;The Bird&amp;rsquo; (they perform both in Purple Rain (1984)), but the first single was &amp;lsquo;Ice Cream Castles&amp;rsquo;, in which Morris Day drops his usual &amp;lsquo;bring me a mirror&amp;rsquo; schtick to sing about falling in love with a white woman.&amp;nbsp; Nothing else on side one of &amp;lsquo;Ice Cream Castles&amp;rsquo; is as powerful, but it&amp;rsquo;s the three songs on Side Two that make this The Time&amp;rsquo;s most commercially and artistically successful album.&amp;nbsp; Nevertheless, for all his love of party-time, Prince&amp;rsquo;s musical experimentation would soon get more serious, and the events surrounding his next project, The Family, would ultimately change the direction of his music, and the course of his career, forever.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;In their short lifetime Young Marble Giants: Alison Statton and brothers Stuart and Phil Moxham released one album, a handful of singles and a Peel Session; the album, 1980's acclaimed&lt;em&gt; Colossal Youth&lt;/em&gt;, is one of the most definitive records of the post punk era. Taking the unprecedented step of making their first ever release a long player certainly paid off. &lt;em&gt;Colossal Youth&lt;/em&gt; became a parallel soundtrack to the unsteady stabs of the post punk early eighties, and quickly became one of (the then nascent) Rough Trade Records best sellers. Becalmed, resigned and a little tense, it created a new vocabulary for song.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since its release the sound of &lt;em&gt;Colossal Youth&lt;/em&gt; has seeped into the vocabulary of personal music. Young Marble Giants made the abstract immediate and the introspective warm and natural. Their influence filters through every generation from Nirvana to Belle &amp;amp; Sebastian, and there is something almost canonical about the album's use of voice, muted instruments and space. Their tracks have been covered by Belle &amp;amp; Sebastian and Courtney Love's Hole; &lt;em&gt;Colossal Youth's&lt;/em&gt; attention to sparse detail is now a modus operandi for haunted electronica auteurs and spectral singer-songwriters alike, but ultimately, only the Young Marble Giants sound like Young Marble Giants. Domino are proud to re-release &lt;em&gt;Colossal Youth&lt;/em&gt; and the Collected Works of Young Marble Giants, drawing together the band's album and singles for the first time ever on a CD set. Before embarking on the globe-spanning journeys on which &lt;em&gt;In The Pines&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt; gestated, The Triffids had, in 1986, banked the first of the succession of masterpieces, &lt;em&gt;Born Sandy Devotional&lt;/em&gt;, a furious hymn to the desolation of the soul, set in the Australian outback. &lt;em&gt;Born Sandy Devotional&lt;/em&gt; won gleaming reviews at the time, and again upon its re-release in 2006 (&quot;A dazzling treasure,&quot; said Uncut. &quot;One of the dozen greatest albums ever made,&quot; said The Guardian).  The Triffids recorded &lt;em&gt;Born Sandy Devotional&lt;/em&gt; in a studio in London, its blindingly intense reflections of their homeland perhaps partly fuelled by homesickness. &lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Wandering off into the outback, much like one of the deranged characters that had inhabited &lt;em&gt;Born Sandy Devotional&lt;/em&gt;, did not seem calculated to redeem the tantalising promise of that astounding album. The Triffids knew what they were doing, though: &lt;em&gt;In The Pines&lt;/em&gt; is a thing of modest majesty, at once haunted by the desolation of its circumstances (the gothic folk waltz of the title track, the knelling, intense &quot;Kathy Knows&quot;) and suffused with the infectious camaraderie of people making music for the joy of it (a rowdy singalong of Bill Anderson's country standard &quot;Once A Day&quot;, led by Graham Lee, at what one can only suspect was the end of a very, very long day). &lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt;, repackaged with an extra disc of demo recordings, was named after an arcane term for sunstroke; the album's bewildering failure to shift copies by the million suggested that that the record-buying public had fallen prey to precisely this affliction. &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt; roared into life with its opening track and first single, &quot;Bury Me Deep In Love,&quot; a soaring ballad that still deserves to be remembered for more than soundtracking the wedding of Harold and Madge on &quot;Neighbours.&quot;   Despite starting with the bar set so stratospherically high, &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt; did not waver. &quot;A Trick Of The Light&quot; blossomed into a feather-delicate pop classic reminiscent of fellow under-rated Antipodeans The Go Betweens. &quot;Jerdacuttup Man&quot; McComb's channeling of the internal monologue of a centuries-dead British Museum exhibit drew from Celtic folk roots planted deep beneath the surface sheen of the album's production. &quot;Holy Water,&quot; set to a shuffling drum machine, hinted at the always restless Triffids' interest in electronica, something explored further on the newly included b-side &quot;Love The Fever&quot; (and on as-yet-regrettably-unreleased covers of Madonna's &quot;Into The Groove&quot; and Pet Shop Boys' &quot;Rent&quot;). &quot;Save What You Can,&quot; the album's closing track for which a new video has been shot is the perfect signoff, definitive David McComb, both ragingly passionate and coolly laconic. &quot;Time is against us,&quot; he croons, &quot;even love conspires to disgrace us, and things being what they are...&quot;  Two very, very different albums from one very, very different band and two chances to buy records this astonishing is one more than anyone should need.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt;, repackaged with an extra disc of demo recordings, was named after an arcane term for sunstroke; the album's bewildering failure to shift copies by the million suggested that that the record-buying public had fallen prey to precisely this affliction. &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt; roared into life with its opening track and first single, &quot;Bury Me Deep In Love,&quot; a soaring ballad that still deserves to be remembered for more than soundtracking the wedding of Harold and Madge on &quot;Neighbours.&quot;   Despite starting with the bar set so stratospherically high, &lt;em&gt;Calenture&lt;/em&gt; did not waver. &quot;A Trick Of The Light&quot; blossomed into a feather-delicate pop classic reminiscent of fellow under-rated Antipodeans The Go Betweens. &quot;Jerdacuttup Man&quot; McComb's channeling of the internal monologue of a centuries-dead British Museum exhibit drew from Celtic folk roots planted deep beneath the surface sheen of the album's production. &quot;Holy Water,&quot; set to a shuffling drum machine, hinted at the always restless Triffids' interest in electronica, something explored further on the newly included b-side &quot;Love The Fever&quot; (and on as-yet-regrettably-unreleased covers of Madonna's &quot;Into The Groove&quot; and Pet Shop Boys' &quot;Rent&quot;). &quot;Save What You Can,&quot; the album's closing track for which a new video has been shot is the perfect signoff, definitive David McComb, both ragingly passionate and coolly laconic. &quot;Time is against us,&quot; he croons, &quot;even love conspires to disgrace us, and things being what they are...&quot;  Two very, very different albums from one very, very different band and two chances to buy records this astonishing is one more than anyone should need.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;There needed to be a gloomy remotely intimate glam pop group named after a character created by Franz Kafka who detuned their pained, pining guitars like the Velvet Underground, who screwed up dance beats with as much nimble knowingness and/or amateurish exuberance as Devo, who faced up to long lasting reality with as much sad, mad grace as Magazine, who got stuck into logic as defiantly as Pere Ubu, who had spent a lot of time watching Television and listening to the first six or seven songs written by Buzzcocks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They took themselves very seriously whilst circling the idea that fun was a very peculiar notion.  They were The Sound of Young Scotland, together with Orange Juice, whose guitars were also radiant and brittle, whose rhythms were also scrubbed and blunt, whose vocals were also proud and serious, but who sounded like another group completely.  A touch more rational. A little less glaring. A splinter less uptight. Lacking, perhaps, the art for art's sake element that some of us swooned over, and which we see explicitly echoed in the way, say, the popular Franz Ferdinand express themselves.  Their own men.  In their own special time.  Who would know when it was time to quit.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Freed Man &lt;/em&gt;was one of the first and most crucial releases in the burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in media attention in the mid 1990s with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices and Pavement. But while it helped inspire and define a global movement, there's little trace of that ambition within these tracks. Sebadoh in this incarnation are a cherishably intimate experience. The seventy-odd minutes of wayward brilliance collected here offer the listener the rare and recommended opportunity to transport themselves to the weedhazed bedroom where these scraps and songs and pranks were recorded, to imbibe deeply of the haywire creativity that went on in these sessions.  Finally released in deluxe edition, this is the second Sebadoh reissue from Domino, following last year's critically lauded release of &lt;em&gt;III&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;em&gt;The Freed Man&lt;/em&gt; re-issue has been re-mastered and includes a whopping 52 tracks on a single disc, including many tracks that have never seen the light of day until now.             <description>&lt;p&gt;Even before his acrimonious departure from Dinosaur Jr, bassist Lou Barlow was recording his own material. Dinosaur's second album, 1987's &lt;em&gt;You're Living All Over Me&lt;/em&gt;, had closed with &quot;Poledo,&quot; one of Barlow's tape experiments - a chilling mess of funereal folk and disturbing, manipulated found sounds. Lou, it transpires, had been messing about with tape recorders since he was a kid. &quot;My sisters had one of the first cheap tape-recorders,&quot; he remembers, &quot;And my cousin showed me that if you half-press the 'ffw' button and the 'record' button and yell into the mic, it'll make this nice stretched-out groaning sound. That cracked me up! I started making cassettes of me playing guitar and singing, real primitive multi-tracking, when I was about twelve. Twenty-five years later, I still have them somewhere.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As he became more and more estranged from Dinosaur front man J Mascis, Barlow immersed himself in his home-recorded music. He made cassettes and began selling them through small 'indie' record stores. &quot;I did it for myself, primarily, but with the understanding that other people would find it. It immediately made sense to some people, like Eric Gaffney.&quot;  Gaffney, a singer/guitarist/drummer Barlow describes as &quot;a musical terrorist,&quot; would form the yin to Barlow's yang in Sebadoh for their first two self-released cassettes, &lt;em&gt;The Freed Weed&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Weed Forestin&lt;/em&gt;. Together, they'd collate impenetrable experiments, fucked-up songs, confessional folk fragments, and collages of ambient and found sounds, bouncing off each other, trying to outdo each other in this explosion of errant creativity.  Theirs was a productive, if fraught relationship. Jason &quot;Jake&quot; Loewenstein, a teenaged musician and home-recorder who'd already purchased Sebadoh tapes, joined the group, and they began to tour. &quot;It was all about freedom and democracy, this chaos&quot; explains Barlow.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They were hella productive boys, too. This remastered re-release of the album comes bolstered with a disk swollen with tracks recorded around the time of &lt;em&gt;III'&lt;/em&gt;s sessions. The bonus disk opens with the group's &lt;em&gt;Gimme Indie Rock!&lt;/em&gt; EP, it's sardonic title track an ecstatic homage-to/deconstruction-of the burgeoning indie-rock genre, complete with shout-outs to Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore and even Dinosaur. &quot;I felt the music of the underground had become one-dimensional, noisy, and I wanted to fashion my own response to that,&quot; Barlow told &lt;em&gt;Mojo&lt;/em&gt; magazine, last year. &quot;I knew I was on the right track, when people said I was a 'pussy' for playing an acoustic guitar. I'd found my new passion: quiet was the new loud.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

One of the finest, most underrated groups of all-time and we get to re-issue their long, out-of-print early recordings. It really is hard to overstate how important Orange Juice was in terms of influence musically...The Smiths, The Pastels, Belle &amp;amp; Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand and countless others are indebted to this maverick group who were arguably the first big indie/guitar pop sensation in the UK (though basically ignored here, criminal that part).  But you can read the full story when you pick up &lt;em&gt;The Glasgow School&lt;/em&gt;, which compiles all the studio recordings the band did for Postcard Records, the imprint group leader Edwyn Collins ran along with the legendary Alan Horne.  The deluxe package (and by deluxe we mean DELUXE, a hardbound booklet that will far out live all of us who own it) will include a few audio surprises, as well as a lengthy historical essay penned by the band's original drummer turned acclaimed writer, Steven Daly.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
