Twin Sister announce debut album, In Heaven, and share 'Bad Street'

As might be implied by the title, In Heaven improves on 2010‘s critical darling Color Your Life EP in every possible way, showcasing the band’s wildly imaginative songwriting paired with flawless execution, by way of intense dedication to both musicianship and recording. While that record is a beautiful struggle against the realities of recording in apartments and between day jobs, In Heaven is the band unfettered by limitations- it is them streaking across a highwire under complete and total control.

As this is a debut, a little background is in order- having met while playing in various bands across both coasts of Long Island throughout their teenage years, each spied on one another covetously, while Andrea Estella (vocals) and Eric Cardona (guitar, vocals) formed an intense songwriting bond, around which the core of the band’s lyrics and imagery are built. Gabel D’Amico, Bryan Ujueta, and Udbhav Gupta were friends and impressive songwriters and musicians themselves (all play keys, Gabe bass and guitar, Bryan drums and guitar, Dev a talented sampler/engineer). When their other projects fizzled, Twin Sister inevitably formed, and the band began posting demos and ideas freely to their website with remarkable consistency (100+ over a two year period, still up on the site). Polishing their favorites, they released Color Your Life and toured relentlessly, earning praise for their raucous live show in equal measure with a torrent of fawning record reviews.

To the core, Twin Sister is a capital (p) Pop band. The songs on In Heaven radiate and glow, a firework show set against a broad black canvas; youthful exuberance echoes throughout. Taken as a whole, In Heaven proves itself a document of endless preparation and excited execution, the fulfilled promise of bliss.

In Heaven will be available on CD, LP and via digital download on September 26th, 2011. Tracklisting is as follows:

1. Daniel
2. Stop
3. Bad Street
4. Space Babe
5. Kimmi In a Rice Field
6. Luna’s Theme
7. Spain
8. Gene Ciampi
9. Saturday Sunday
10. Eastern Green

We are thrilled to unveil the new video for Wild Beasts’ forthcoming single, Albatross. Filmed in London by the distinctive Dave Ma, the video is a beautiful, dreamlike sequence of images featuring the band along side a female dancer, capturing the high abstraction and intensity of the song. The video emits a sense of reflection about loss and an underlying hope of being free.

Wild Beasts announce their third album

Following on from the success of their critically acclaimed and mercury nominated second album Two Dancers, Wild Beasts are preparing to unveil the next chapter in their career with the release of their much anticipated new album, Smother, on 9th May 2011.

Never ones to conform, on Smother Wild Beasts have almost gone inwards, embracing their more electronic influences to create a collection of deeply intense and personal songs that pulse with quiet storm sensuality. The result of a heavy six week period of writing in East London, tied in with a month of recording the record in remotest Wales with long term collaborator Richard Formby co-producing, Smother is very much so an album in the traditional sense; 10 evocative songs that sound as if they couldn't exist anywhere outside of this record. Delicate, yet bold, Smother is the kind of record that quietly grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go and confirms what so many people have always suspected of Wild Beasts; that they are a truly special, unique British band who aren't afraid to wander into unfamiliar territories.

Smother will be available on CD (WIGCD267), LP (WIGLP267) and via digital download (WIG267D).

For an insight into what to expect of Smother, and admittedly, yet appropriately, it's a beautifully abstract insight, check out the trailer for the record here:

As well as the confirmation of a new album, Wild Beasts can also announce a UK tour for May in intimate venues, which include two very special London shows at the wonderfully atmospheric Wilton’s Music Hall on May 11th and 12th.

Full UK dates are as follows:

Thu 5th May: Gateshead Old Town Hall, Newcastle UK
Fri 6th May: Oran Mor, Glasgow UK
Sun 8th May: Brudenell Social Club, Leeds UK
Mon 9th May: Y Theatre, Leicester UK
Wed 11th May: Wilton's Music Hall, London UK
Thurs 12th May: Wilton’s Music Hall, London UK
Fri 13th May: Guildhall, Gloucester UK
Sat 14th May: City Hall Grand Ballroom, Sheffield UK

Tickets for all shows go on sale on Friday the 25th through the usual outlets.

The tracklisting to Smother is as follows:

Two Dancers is the second Wild Beasts album. Co-produced by the band and northern enigma Richard Formby in remote Norfolk earlier this year, it follows 2008’s widely celebrated debut Limbo, Panto. The result is a record of tightrope-high drama, put simply, Two Dancers finds the Wild Beasts on fire. Two Dancers is alive with its sense of possibility, a sound that shimmers and sways in the band’s own mercurial fashion. Sit back and listen with wonder at the thrill of it all.

Two Dancers inhabits its own landscape, as Tom Fleming says, it's "a series of scenes…a big party, the street outside later on, or in a bedroom, or desperately hungry and starving to death on a distant beach." The words "bedroom," "desperately" and "party" perfectly capture the energies at work in Two Dancers. Equal to the euphoria and sense of expectation is a feeling of helplessness. Hedonism can produce a long night of the soul that burns on wired emotions, and on what Fleming calls "meaningless lust." The album’s lead single "Hooting And Howling," from its title down, captures this perfectly. Consisting of a staring match between guitarist Benny Little and lead vocalist Hayden Thorpe, "Hooting and Howling" is equal parts statement of intent, and relentless eye contact from a priapic state of mind. As with rest of the album, it feels slightly delirious, having turned itself inside out and finding a state of unique musical grace.

Two Dancers is full of references to the following: booty calls, puckered lips, bodies as perfect machines, and dim-lit streets. Lyrically Two Dancers is equally energetic and ripe. In "All The King’s Men" Fleming sings with purposeful intent about "Girls from Rodean, girls from Shipley, from Hounslow, girls from Whitby" as Hayden Thorpe’s falsetto soars with palpable anticipation. In this song, as on the whole of the album, Wild Beasts dare you to cut loose and be seduced, but you’ll join in on the disorientation along the way.

The album’s shorter tracks, the two minutes of "Underbelly" and "When I’m Sleepy," allow delicious moments for pause. "We were trying to come up with a way to describe it," as Fleming puts it "and the nearest we got is erotic downbeat music." Both are suggestive and abstract, capturing the fine art of feeling weird by shimmering in a twilight cadence. The band’s performances throughout are pure liquid energy. The needlepoint drama is a result of the band eschewing studio hyper gloss by playing together in the room - “recorded live, no over thinking” explains Thorpe. The sound and sensation of a band, to borrow the lyric of "This Is Our Lot," 'dancing late / like young reprobates.'

And Two Dancers is indeed a record made by real young men. As Thorpe, owner of one of the most wildly emotive falsettos observes, "It’s such a cliché to be perceived as being different. We’re seen as being outsiders, and that makes us close up the ranks even more.’" In closing up the ranks Wild Beasts have made a record of earthly pleasures that sounds thrillingly widescreen, open and in awe of life; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possibilities of pleasure.

Steve Reid

Today, April 13th, marks the second anniversary of Steve Reid's passing and we wanted to celebrate his legacy by sharing some musical highlights from his life.

Steve Reid was a giant of a drummer, who began playing professionally at the age of 16. His first recorded work was with Martha And The Vandellas, working in the Apollo Theatre House band, under the direction of Quincy Jones. Over the years Steve recorded and played with artists such as Miles Davies, Fela Kuti, James Brown and Sun Ra, amongst other musical legends.

Domino had the pleasure of releasing The Steve Reid Ensemble’s Daxaar album in 2007 and Steve’s groundbreaking works with Kieran Hebden, the albums The Exchange Session Vol. 1, The Exchange Session Vol. 2, Tongues and their final collaboration NYC.

Kieran and Steve's musical partnership produced a stunning series of albums. Here's what Kieran had to say at the time of Steve's death: "Steve was one of my great friends and the most wonderful musician I have ever encountered. The music and adventures we shared have been some of the most happy and meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. A true inspiration. He lived a great life and gave us incredible music. I’ll miss him forever."

Two years on he is sorely missed.

Here's a playlist of some of his greatest musical moments:

Dirty Projectors announce new album 'Swing Lo Magellan'

All of us here at Domino are super-excited to announce Dirty Projectors' highly anticipated sixth album, Swing Lo Magellan on July 9th in the UK and Europe and July 10th in North America.

With Swing Lo Magellan, David Longstreth shows he really doesn't know how to do the same thing twice. This time, beyond the aughts-era duality of retromania and neophilia, and beyond his band's reputation for dizzying, heady innovation, Longstreth has found the beautiful, generous simplicity of the heart and soul. Same as it ever was. And this must be exactly the place where he's planted the seeds for his band's finest album to date.

And you are able to enjoy the fruitful bounty of those seeds: the first track to be made available from the record, "Gun Has No Trigger" is available to stream right now:

Where prior DPz albums investigated 20th-century orchestration (The Getty Address), aerated the aesthetics of 80s hardcore and west African guitar music (Rise Above), and explored complex contrapuntal techniques in human voices (Bitte Orca and Mt Wittenberg Orca), Swing Lo Magellan is a leap forward again.

"It's an album of songs, an album of songwriting," says Longstreth.

The songs of Swing Lo Magellan are culled from a sprawling twelve months of constant writing and recording in a weird house in Delaware County, New York (four hours northwest of the city). Longstreth, who produced and mixed, wrote seventy new songs and beats. The band - Amber Coffman (vocals & guitar), Nat Baldwin (bass), Brian McOmber (drums) & Haley Dekle (vocals) (vocalist Angel Deradoorian is on hiatus) - joined him periodically, rehearsing the new music more or less constantly in the house's A-frame attic

The twelve songs of Swing Lo Magellan were winnowed down from about forty finished demos. The finished recordings bear the impress of this informal working style: the album is a collection of moments: accidental, fortuitous, spontaneous. The performances feel warm and imperfect. Unguarded intimacy is somewhat of a new look for this band, and it turns out it's a very good look.

Here's the tracklist:
1. Offspring Are Blank
2. About to Die
3. Gun Has No Trigger
4. Swing Lo Magellan
5. Just From Chevron
6. Dance For You
7. Maybe That Was It
8. Impregnable Question
9. See What She Seeing
10. The Socialites
11. Unto Caesar
12. Irresponsible Tune

And finally, here are a couple of tour dates, because you deserve it:
July 10 - Brooklyn NY - Prospect Park Bandshell
July 13-15 (exact date TBA) - Chicago IL - Pitchfork Festival

Swing Lo Magellan

On Dirty Projectors sixth album, Swing Lo Magellan, songwriter and leader David Longstreth shows he really doesn't know how to do the same thing twice.

Where prior Dirty Projectors albums investigated 20th-century orchestration, west African guitar music and complex contrapuntal techniques in human voices, Swing Lo Magellan is a leap forward again. It's an album of songs, an album of songwriting.

Swing Lo Magellan has both the handmade intimacy of a love letter and the widescreen grandeur of a blockbuster, and if that sounds like a paradox -- it's because it was until now.

EXCLUSIVE DOMINO MART DELUXE LP PRE-ORDER BUNDLE FEATURES:

In Our Heads

Recorded in London and produced by the band with Mark Ralph, In Our Heads is the band’s follow up to 2010’s intoxicating One Life Stand and their first LP for Domino. In Our Heads will be available on CD, LP and digitally. There will also be a special edition vinyl of the album available on gatefold double LP with a bonus artworked 7” featuring an exclusive track. A free download of Flutes is available immediately when pre-ordering In Our Heads through Domino.

The collective talents of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, Alexis Taylor, Felix Martin, Al Doyle and Owen Clarke have provided a consistently stellar output which continues to evolve with a deceptive effortlessness. While their lexicon of influences includes a diverse mix of soul, R&B, gospel, Detroit House, disco and funk, Hot Chip have created a uniquely identifiable sound. Since 2004, they’ve released a string of ambitious and creatively bold albums of soulful, lyrical and melodic electronic pop. Their impressive debut Coming On Strong was followed in 2006 by the brilliantly buoyant The Warning, which earned the band a prestigious Mercury Music Prize nomination. 2008’s Made In The Dark spawned an international mega hit in “Ready For The Floor”, which picked up a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Dance Recording’. With In Our Heads, an unadulterated delight of an album bursting with dynamic floor fillers, euphoric earworms and verbose synth-fuelled love songs, Hot Chip cement their position as the world’s most talented electro-romantics.

Diamond Mine Jubilee Edition

Diamond Mine, the critically acclaimed debut collaborative album from King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, is getting the Jubilee version treatment on 16th April 2012. The original, Mercury-nominated album is augmented with extra material including all three tracks from the Honest Words EP, B-side Missionary and two brand new songs, Third Swan and Starboard Home.

Released a year ago to outstanding reviews, Diamond Mine has since become a much cherished album for an ever growing number of listeners. Featuring instrumental moments as affecting as the lyrical, the record consists of newly interpreted obscure delights picked out from 20 years of King Creosote’s treasure chest of a back catalogue. Intended to be heard as a single experience, Diamond Mine produces a near classical suite of emotion ranging from cracked despair to patched-up euphoria.

Third Swan: ‘The much revisited inspirational well of ructions, relationships and regrettable behaviour has very recently been replenished with a leaky bucket of political angst, due in no small part to James Robertson's fine novel "and the land lay still". "Third swan" is also a comment on how euphoria and despair sit side by side, with a few St. Andrews place names thrown in for good measure. To exist as the ugly duckling between two paragons of swan-like virtue is, no doubt, the metaphor that ties all of this together. In short, there was a lot swirling around my head in the dark weeks leading up to the end of 2011, and it had to end up on this, the penultimate page, of the Diamond Mine travelogue.’

Starboard Home: ‘As the good ship "Diamond Mine" ties up alongside our wave battered pier, the buffeting by wind and waves on our emotional voyage is replaced by the mournful cries of marsh birds and the welcoming voices of our loved ones, the ocean swell swapped for the comforting sight of the harbour lights.’

E Volo Love

The first ever French Domino signings are ready to spread their wings over indie pop’s vast international landscape. With vivid looks and a slender body, Fránçois builds up castles in Saintonge, France, with Moroccan mountains, British phlegm and sturdy friendships. After seven years of passionate gigs and road trips across Europe which has seen them tour with Electrelane, Camera Obscura and most recently with Mercury-nominated King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains convey a magnetic presence on stage. A deep sense of lightness and sincerity sets in as voices, keyboards and African percussion blend into instant pop.

E Volo Love (which is a palindrome), is comprised of eleven elegant, fragile, velvet-plush songs on an album that is heart-meltingly delicate, enchanting and otherworldly. Delicately poised between sunnily feel-good and wistfully melancholy, E Volo Love has a poignant, end-of-summer feel to it. The grand theme on this dual-language album – sung in both French and English – is simply love.

An open collective, Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains has become a four-piece band over the years. Besides Fránçois who gives the band its name and soul, Amaury Ranger embodies its vibrating body thanks to the sheer intensity of his percussive skills. A new recruit, Scottish Gerard Black made a name for himself playing with Bill Wells and Findo Gask before joining forces with the band and leading an underground dolce vita in Bordeaux. Another Bordeaux stalwart, Pierre aka Petit Fantôme is a local musical treasure.

E Volo Love was written whilst Fránçois Marry surfed, cycled and wandered through the countryside, and was recorded in a church in Saintes, his hometown near La Rochelle in south west France.

The album’s hot buttered sound comes from its wide range of influences, from French chanson, traditional indie pop and Aphex Twin to African and Middle Eastern sounds, which can be heard in particular on "Les Plus Beaux" and "Do You Want To Dance", which bookend the album.

Adventures In Your Own Backyard

Adventures... was made at home after a gruelling five-year run that saw Patrick and his band (bassist Mishka Stein bass, guitarist Simon Angell and drummer Robbie Kuster) tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris award-winning Close To Paradise. During this time, Patrick also contributed to Ma Fleur, the 2007 album from The Cinematic Orchestra, co-writing and singing on a sizeable portion of the record. In Patrick’s own words, Adventures... is an effort on the band’s part to “make the kind of music we would want to listen to at home.” The album’s title is a nod to this sentiment and to the fact that it was recorded almost entirely in Watson’s apartment in Montreal, unlike his previous efforts which were sprawling recordings in both geography and arrangements.
In spite of the relatively spartan settings in which to record, Adventures... is equally as ambitious as Watson’s previous efforts and a thing of dynamic beauty. The result is an album that is still ripe with the touchstones one has come to expect from Patrick Watson and his collaborators, but permeated with a greater sense of patience and confidence. Adventures In Your Own Backyard is an attempt by Watson and the band to simplify their sights—to make music a bit more close to home in every sense of the phrase.

Electric Cables

It's no secret that within Domino there is a lot of love for Teenage Fanclub, and that some members of staff have a special fondness for the songs of singer, songwriter and bassist, Gerard Love. In recent times, Gerard has been very much part of The Pastels, who operate occasional Domino imprint, Geographic. The idea of an album of Gerard Love songs burned for a long time until eventually label enthusiasm prevailed, and Gerard agreed that it was an idea that he too was excited about.

From the outset, Gerard was clear that he wanted to establish a group name for the record, a name that was evocative and ambiguous, that could somehow place the music within a slightly blurry and imagined context. He didn't want to give the impression that the record was just about him. Having settled on the name, Lightships, he sought out a cast of Glasgow-based friends to play on the record that was starting to take shape in his head; Dave McGowan (guitar, Teenage Fanclub), Brendan O'Hare (drums, from the first incarnation of Teenage Fanclub), Tom Crossley (flute, International Airport and The Pastels) and Bob Kildea (bass, Belle & Sebastian).

Liberated by a feeling that he had complete carte blanche to do whatever he wanted, Gerard came to a realisation that the key to the sound of the record would be tremolo, delay and flute. At times the record has the dynamics of a soundtrack, as one of Tom Crossley’s flute lines weaves into the ether and Gerard’s vocals bounce off each other. Or, as on Sweetness In Her Spark, the group lock into a relaxed and breezy groove that demands the windows be flung open.

Lightships is a name that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the music - sparkling and radiant and illuminated throughout by Love’s melodic gifts and taste for adventurous arrangements. The overall sound, while as warm and immediate as the songs Gerard writes for Teenage Fanclub, is more free flowing and loose. Muddy Rivers is carried along on a wave of interlocked instrumentation while Photosynthesis is a hazy wash of flutes and echo. On Silver And Gold, Gerard sings with a falsetto before a chorus of harmonies bursts into life. With this music it’s as if he was looking to express something more personal, eccentric and introspective.

Electric Cables is an album of tender, observational songs, played with an invigorating and easy sense of purpose; the sound of friends enjoying one another’s company and allowing ideas and experiments to flourish. It's a complex and rewarding record that you'll want to keep coming back to. Slow illumination.

Ester

Inhabiting their own beautifully dark, ethereal corner of the musical universe, poised somewhere at the crossroads between the nocturnal, rolling soundscapes of Angelo Badalamenti and the sublime, naive melodies of 50s pop, Trailer Trash Tracys are a deliciously unique proposition.

Recorded by the band themselves on a “solfeggio scale” – a scale to which, apparently, western guitars and pianos are not pitched to – Ester is an ambitious achievement that marries an experimental urge with a love for the standards and classics of pop eternal.

The freeform intro “Rolling - Kiss The Universe” leads us into Trailer Trash Tracys’ own otherworldy sonic space in which their ideas play freely. Deep and hazy sonic textures drift around singer Suzanne Aztoria’s gossamer light vocals, which sound as though they were beamed from another dimension, evoking a sensual, yet unnerving tension. The album progresses to reveal ever expanding possibilities, running the gamut from the spiralling guitar shreds of “Engelhardt’s Arizona” to the gloriously seductive and brooding pop of "You Wish You Were Red”, out to the delicate, pinprick orchestrations of “Starlatine”.

The smouldering slow-burn of “Turkish Heights”, meanwhile, closes the album in poignant style, romantic, dreamy and sincere, revealing a tender heart beating indelibly inside the machine.

With “Ester”, the inimitable world of Trailer Trash Tracys is brought to haunting, vivid life (in a visual sense as well, with Kurt Ralske responsible for the artwork) – a little off-kilter, a little askew, but nothing less than utterly beguiling and completely memorable. Treasure them now.

Days

On October 18th 2011, New Jersey’s Real Estate will release Days, their second album and first for Domino. A coming of age moment for childhood friends Martin Courtney (Guitar and Vocals), Matt Mondanile (Guitar) and Alex Bleeker (Bass), Days was recorded over the course of five patient months in a remote New Paltz, NY barn-cum-studio with the help of Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, The Walkmen).

A gorgeous suite of guitar-pop songs, Days is a testament to the fact that the sonic formula Real Estate developed and shared with their debut album (Real Estate, Woodsist 2009) heralded the arrival of a new, genuine and enduring group of voices in American independent music. Days sees the band tighten and refine their brand of timeless, melodic and genuine music- consolidating the breezy sketches of their earlier work into considered, graceful pop songs.

The songs are built around deceptively simple, cyclical riffs; caressed and performed with a rhythm and restraint that is atypical for a band Real Estate's age. The instruments swim together, anchored down by Bleeker's firm Lesh-esque bass, ebbing and flowing, occasionally enriched with flourishes of country piano, soft synths and slide guitar. Several songs, like the album's rousing first single "It's Real" were written by Courtney in the way he wrote some of his first songs, laying out their architecture first on a bass rather than a guitar, allowing him to evolve the song's basic melody.

Others, like "Green Aisles" and the Bleeker-fronted "Wonder Years" formed out of extended jams, providing them a fluid structure that only a band of craftsmen could make sound so effortless and guided. Courtney has also matured as a lyricist, adeptly capturing and singing youth's most potent crystalline moments with a surgeon's precision. He wrote most of the songs on Days early in the morning, immediately upon waking up, when the unscripted promise of a new day was still in its purest form. In "Green Aisles" he sings "all those aimless drives through green aisles / our careless lifestyle, it was not so unwise". Such a sentiment is an almost perfect lens through which to view Days, the coming of age album they've made.

Days is greater than the sum of its parts, as defined by its ebullient moments as it is by its moments of restraint. Lyrically and melodically part of what makes Real Estate’s music so vital are the moments where the disarmingly simple is made unexpectedly profound.

Cass McCombs is to release his second album this year, Humor Risk, on November 8th.

Humor Risk was recorded in various homes and studios in California, New York, New Jersey and Chicago, and was produced by Cass McCombs and Ariel Rechtshaid, with whom he created Wit’s End, and before that, CATACOMBS.

Humor Risk is an attempt at laughter instead of confusion, chaos instead of morality, or, as fellow Northern Californian Jack London said, “I would rather be ashes than dust!”. Musically, it is more rhythm-based, tempos swifter to nearly rocking, than the sparse Wit’s End. Infectious melodies are outlined by a wry lyricism that expresses the stories of characters from McCombs’ native land. Rather than fulfilling the stereotype of the confessional singer-songwriter, he describes the lifestyles and feelings of those that surround him, with more love than judgment: drugs, Scientology, Western America, and so on, in allegorical form.

Humor Risk portrays yet another façade of this versatile, incredibly talented and much underrated artist.

The relatively new two young lads explain how they got invited to join the band and the chaps sift through an enormous pile of 10p records bought in the excellent Birmingham branch of Record & Tape exchange.

So, two tracks from The Fall to hear, as well as a special Archie Bronson Outfit remix, the next single from "Becoming A Jackal" by Villagers, a lovely bit of Robert Wyatt and the beautiful sound of young L.A. new boys Chief.

This edition we share a very sticky bun with Steve Mason to talk about his new LP and Raith Rovers Football Club. We interrupt Quasi as they drive their wee tour bus between Atlanta, Georgia and Brirmingham, Alabama. Plus, Dev from Lightspeed Champion tells us how the prostitutes of Dalston in North London inspired his new single (and how to play it on the guitar!).

Also you’ll also hear a song entitled "Release The Chickens", classics from Pavement and The Steve Reid Ensemble and a proper exclusive: a not-to-be-heard-anywhere-else song from the mindcrushingly good new LP from Villagers.

ALEX CHILTON - THE SINGER AND THE SONGS (December 28, 1950 – March 17, 2010)

Alex Chilton was a soul singer. The music of Alex Chilton and Big Star has a huge emotional depth to it that has resonated through the years, which is why he had, and still has, a huge influence on people who form rock’n’roll bands. Well, the good ones anyway. It’s also why he never sold too many records, because regular folks can’t take that kind of honesty. They prefer the fake to the real and the overdone to the understated. Alex Chilton was one of the givers. His life was a triumph for art, truth, singing and rock’n’roll music. I don’t go for that underachiever shit that the “journos” always go on about - the guy made three of the greatest albums of all time!!! What a fucking talent!

Let me tell you my Alex Chilton story. Indulge me, cos I’m a bit choked up here. In 1986 I released a record by the Replacements, called Boink!, on my label, Glass Records. It was a mini LP culled from some of their earlier releases but had an unreleased track called “Nowhere Is My Home” produced by Alex Chilton, which mightily impressed Nikki Sudden, who alongside his brother Epic Soundtracks, first turned me on to Alex’s music. Nikki and Epic are sadly no longer with us either. 6 years later I was working at Creation Records and I met Alex at Victoria Station straight off the Gatwick Express. Creation brought him over to London to talk about making a record. Me and Alan McGee took him out for a couple of drinks and had a real nice time. The next day Alex and myself went up to Glasgow together on the train for the weekend to record a hastily arranged session for BBC Radio Scotland with Teenage Fanclub. He told me some great stories, like taking acid for the first time with Dennis Wilson, and hanging out at Dennis’s place when Manson and “all those chicks” were around. I lapped all that stuff up. I love all those stories. He was damn good company. At the rehearsal for the Radio thing, Alex asked the band to play “Alcoholiday”, his favourite song from “Bandwagonesque”, which he then proceeded to sing, and yes he knew all the words. Imagine how you’d feel if Alex Chilton sang one of your songs, two feet away from your face. I tell you, walking into the Griffin, where all the Glasgow bands hung out, with Alex fuckin’ Chilton was totally genius. Cries of “No way!!” could be heard all the way up past the King’s Cafe to Sauchiehall Street. Well, for some reason or another that record never happened, and I think that it was a great disappointment to him, as indeed it was to me.

Alex, it was a pleasure and a privilege to know you for a brief time. You are the MAN and I remain, your fan. God bless.

David E Barker March 2010.

Here are some other stories and tributes from some of Alex’s friends and fans.

I feel lucky that with Teenage Fanclub we had the opportunity to work with Alex a few times and through that to fully realise what an amazing musician he was. I’d actually been reminiscing about working with Alex the day before I found out he’d died, remembering a radio session we recorded in ‘92 where, at his instigation of course, we worked on an instrumental version of a theme from the overture of Wagner’s Tannhauser. On the day I heard he’d died I went to a concert, the thought of which had prompted my reminiscence, where the Scottish Symphony Orchestra played the overture of Tannhauser. Of course, in my mind this was a beautiful little tribute to him, someone for whom the work of Wagner, Eddie Floyd, and Joe Meek were all part of the same thing. Alex was inspiring to me in terms of his songwriting, his eclecticism, his not just innovative but also accomplished musicianship, and all that allied with his disdain for sycophancy and bullshit. He was a great guy and I always enjoyed his company. Raymond McGinley, Teenage Fanclub

I was introduced to the music of Alex Chilton by Brian Taylor, guitarist in the first Pastels lineup. Brian, it's fair to say was not too impressed by many things, but Alex had found his favour, and he seemed to love everything from pop soul sides with the Box Tops through to raw but exciting productions for The Cramps and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Me, I really liked Alex's voice and some of his songs; hearing September Gurls for the first time was unbelievably thrilling. Alex always seemed like someone who could move easily from era to era - 1960s, 1970s, 1980s. He was clever enough to keep moving and aware enough to usually have the right length of hair for the time. Eventually he started turning up in Glasgow thanks to super enthusiastic fans like Jason from V-Twin, and of course the Teenage Fanclub connection, which he knew was a good thing. I met him a couple of times and he seemed kind of there, not there. But somehow I expected this smart traveller to keep moving; moving through things and around them, to be here for ever or at least until he was 100. Not to be. It's like the feeling you get from listening to so many of his lovely, sad songs. Stephen Pastel, Glasgow. March 2010

We were in LA mixing an album and Alex is passing through town. He has a show at McCabes guitar shop and invites us down. Alex plays a great set and we hang out afterwards and drink beer. He tells us that he's going to be playing at a Beach Boys fanclub event the next evening and that we should “really” come down as it's going to be “very special”.

We make our way to a small theater in Santa Monic, once inside, us and the fifty other people there take our seats and watch The Beach Boys Hawaii concert movie along with a load of outtakes and rare and unseen clips. Next, we are treated to a set of Beach Boys tunes performed by a band that includes Brian Wilson producer Andy Paley, who are accompanying a number of guest singers. Alex does a great version of Solar System. The show builds to a climax and it seems that the night is over when unexpectedly, Rodney Bingenheimer appears at the front mic and announces that there is to be one more performance, and at that, Brian Wilson shuffles onstage and up to the piano. He sits down and self deprecatingly starts to play "I'm a little teapot" (with the handle and spout arm movements) before launching into "Do it again" and then "God only knows". We are at the front of the stage about five feet away from Brian, gobsmacked. This is his first public performance in a long time. He's fragile but brilliant. Alex is at the other side of the stage and looks over at us with an enormous grin on his face. Thanks for that Alex. What a treat.

Alex Chilton, was a great singer and performer and a much better songwriter than he would have you believe. He is man who told Charles Manson where to get off....but that's another story. Norman Blake, Teenage Fanclub

We did some west coast dates with Alex in 1988 around the time of High Priest. We were all mightily impressed at the Chilton Soundcheck, which involved parking his guitar and his amp on the stage before going straight back out of the venue again in search of good times. (It was a trick he repeated in London in the nineties, striking terror into the hearts of his "minders" by disappearing into the Streets of Fear around King's Cross.)

Then in 92 I ran into him in New Orleans. He wasn't supposed to be drinking, but he took me on a 2 night binge that ended up in a transvestite cowboy bar called "Roundup". It was only supposed to be a one night thing, but when I went out around town the next day I found him banging on the window of a bar that I was passing, beckoning me in for round two, as it were.

Of course, he was a proper Southern Gent, courteous and charming and prone to the occasional "Vietnam moment" where he would sort of glaze over and start muttering incomprehensibly at some unseen foe for a second before snapping back into your reality once again. Like a lot of southern people he had a genuine belief in astrology. Our birthdays were close together ("December boys got it bad") and he called me "the Jack of Hearts". Guess we all knew who the King was.

In New Orleans we went past this bar, which he told us was Muddy Waters' club. "I had some of the best nights of my life in there," he said. I figured he meant that he'd played some gigs there. "No," he replied, "I was the janitor."

That struck me as typical of him. He said that he only really rated three or four of his own songs and was much happier just being a singer, covering other people's stuff. For somebody who had done so much and meant so much to so many, he seemed almost entirely uncorrupted by any kind of "ego". Even after the Big Star revival of the nineties, he would still regularly turn up and play on old sixties revue packages in odd places like Canadian leisure centres.

I never heard him refer to Jody Stevens as anything other than simply "The Drummer". Once in London, Joe Foster was talking to him about the fact that there were Big Star tee shirts on sale; he was concerned that Alex was getting his fair cut of the proceeds. With consummate unconcern Alex told him "Aaaah, that was the Drummer's idea." Case closed.

Alex Chilton was the real thing. Raised in a house full of music in Memphis, he lived the true and proper rock and roll life all his life. I'm not sure that we shall ever see his like again. Pat Fish, The Jazz Butcher

As their name suggests, These New Puritans are a group on a very precise mission. Hailing from around Southend-On-Sea in the UK and consisting of Jack Barnett, his twin brother George, Thomas Hein and Sophie Sleigh-Johnson. Their latest album, Hidden, pulls together a host of unlikely influences – the later work of Steve Reich, Dancehall, Japanese percussion and the great British composer Benjamin Britten. These New Puritans have constructed an imaginarium whose contents are of less importance than the way in which it has been assembled, the creative and unprecedented use of contrasting sound sources to create a massive burst of percussion with layers of sample sounding classical and chunks of contemporary polished pop pushed through an analog filter.

Granted, nothing is ever completely new in pop music, but the album freshly synthesizes older ideas (post-rock textures, no-wave skronk, Steve Reich-influenced phasing) and current trends (dubstep's delay, chart pop's stentorian synth lines, global beats)." - 8.1 Pitchfork

Loops Journal

"Whoop-di-do: the eagerly-anticipated issue #2 of Loops magazine…Quake in boggled awe before Paul Morley’s essay on Michael Jackson. They don’t make music magazines like this anymore." - Dazed & Confused

Issue #2 of Loops, the biannual journal dedicated to music writing from Faber and Domino, is available on March 18th.

Issue #2 features essays from Andy Miller (Est-ce, est-ce ce bon?: on Serge Gainsbourg's flirtation with Nazi chic on Rock Around the Bunker), Dan Franklin (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Fast: on Napalm Death and the Possibility of Life's Destruction) and Frances Morgan on Red Square's Thirty Three and the resonance of rediscovery after the event. Pieces from Simon Reynolds, Nick Kent, Lavinia Greenlaw, Owen Hatherley, Dan Franklin, Matt Thorne and Rob Chapman are also included.

And then there's An Awfully Big Adventure, Paul Morley's spectacularly honest and exposing portrait of Michael Jackson and his debated legacy. Book shelves and tabloid columns have been blasting the ears of fans and critics alike since Jackson’s death, yet very little has been heard. Morley corrects this by unravelling and indulging the myth to ask just who he was, how we came to piece him together through our collective desires and fears, and why his destiny so inevitably reflected the dysfunctionality of the culture. This expansive essay takes a refreshingly imaginative perspective on a story that too often focused on the apocryphal fantasy rather than the magic of the man himself. Morley’s fascinating essay inclines us not just to look at Michael Jackson but to look at ourselves – the very forces implicit in making the man The King of Pop.

Loops is edited by Lee Brackstone and Richard King.

Lee Brackstone is Publishing Director at Faber for pop culture titles and fiction. The Faber pop culture list has published such influential works as Jon Savage’s England’s Dreaming, Simon Reynolds’s Rip It Up and Start Again and Greil Marcus’s Lipstick Traces. Richard King has worked at Domino for 15 years. In that time he has seen the label release records by Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Sebadoh and Robert Wyatt and build an incredible history and reputation. He is currently working on How Soon Is Now?, an access all areas history of the UK independent music business 1975 - 2005.

Loops Issue #2 can be ordered here.

The following is an edited extract of Matt Thorne's piece for Loops 2.

'Gigolos Get Lonely Too': Prince, His Protégées, Side-Projects and Their Influence (Part One: ’78-‘84)

As with Prince’s own releases, the records that his protégées and friends have put out over the last thirty years have been of variable quality. This strand of Prince’s music is driven by two major motivations: Prince’s delight in hiding from public view, and the fact that enjoys being in a studio or on stage over anything else. But it’s more than a straightforward desire to release as much as possible. In fact, it isn’t stretching things too far to see ‘Vanity’, ‘Apollonia’ and ‘Sister Fate’ as Prince’s characters, part of the novel he sings about trying to write in the unreleased ‘Moonbeam Levels.’ Others have suggested it makes more sense to see them as Prince’s alter egos, the name ‘Vanity’ believed to have been inspired by the physical similarity between Denise Matthews and Prince.

In the summer of ’79 Prince took his band of the era to Boulder, Colorado to work on his first planned side-project, a New Wave band named The Rebels. Although the nine Rebels songs are cherished by collectors, it’s disappointing the record wasn’t released, as just as his recordings as Madhouse reveal Prince the jazz musician, the rock underpinnings of several of Prince’s Rebels songs reveal Prince the New Waver but also Prince the rockabilly. It’s also the only album Prince has been involved in where he really is just one of the band rather than merely trying to give this impression; from now on he’d always remain in command.

Instead of The Rebels, Prince’s most significant early side-project was the first album by The Time. The six-track album features Prince in deep disguise, co-producing under the pseudonym Jamie Starr. The Time would evolve into a band with a very clear identity, but the project initially grew out of, Lisa Coleman told me, jokes and silliness. She was living with Prince at the time, and her contribution to the album was greater than has previously been acknowledged. “My room was upstairs, so he would call me down, 'Lisa, would you help me do this string part? What about these lyrics? Can you finish this verse?' He involved me, I punched him in while he was playing the drums, whatever it was.”

She wasn’t there the night they decided to make Morris Day the front-man, but remembers him as a cute freckle-faced boy with a big ‘fro who would run and get them hamburgers. Lisa says Prince never doubted that Morris would rise to the challenge, although she felt, “The guy had had a huge responsibility thrust upon him and what seemed like fun and games at first became a big deal.’”

Vanity 6, Prince’s first female-fronted side-project, was closer to Dirty Prince. The band started out as the Hookers, and very nearly had a lead singer named ‘Vagina’, but Vanity 6 were always a pop band. What gives Prince’s earliest work much of its charm is his tireless subservience before unkind, promiscuous or uninterested women, and it seems surprising but sweet that when writing his first songs for women to sing he didn’t take on the persona of the unavailable lover, but imagined instead a sister to his poor sexually frustrated brothers. The band’s most famous song, ‘Nasty Girl,’ may be less well-known than Prince’s greatest hits, but it’s among the most influential songs Prince has written.

While working on the Vanity 6 album, Prince had also been preparing The Time’s second album, released a fortnight later. Morris Day stands alone on What Time Is It?, checking his watch in front of a wall covered with clocks. The record has more character than its predecessor, and although it is structured similarly, with three long dance tracks and three shorter songs, the lyrics are sharper and less generic, the concept now clearly in focus. It’d be the hits from the third Time album that’d truly fix the band in the public consciousness, but this is just as good.

Prince took these two bands on tour as support when promoting 1999, happy to reveal himself as puppet-master. The friction between the various camps spilt out beyond the shows and Lisa remembers there being no doubt as to who was in charge. “There were three buses. Our bus had a video-machine on it, and we stopped at a truck stop and the video machine was gone. Me and Dez went onto Vanity 6's bus and Prince was on the bus watching something with Vanity. And we said ‘hey, that's from our bus’ and he said, 'they're all my buses.’”

Almost two years would pass between the second Time album and Prince’s next full-length project with a protégée, Sheila E’s The Glamorous Life (1984). Prince presented Sheila E with songs that he’d already recorded, allowing her to replace his scratch vocal and then building up most songs around her percussion. Prince often experiments with techniques and styles in his side-projects that don’t reach full fruition in his own work until several years later and the first Sheila E album has less in common with the very mainstream rock record he’d just completed than their later collaborations on Sign O’The Times and Lovesexy.

The Time’s third album, ‘Ice Cream Castle’ features the two songs for which the band are now best known, ‘Jungle Love’ and ‘The Bird’ (they perform both in Purple Rain (1984)), but the first single was ‘Ice Cream Castles’, in which Morris Day drops his usual ‘bring me a mirror’ schtick to sing about falling in love with a white woman. Nothing else on side one of ‘Ice Cream Castles’ is as powerful, but it’s the three songs on Side Two that make this The Time’s most commercially and artistically successful album. Nevertheless, for all his love of party-time, Prince’s musical experimentation would soon get more serious, and the events surrounding his next project, The Family, would ultimately change the direction of his music, and the course of his career, forever.

Colossal Youth

In their short lifetime Young Marble Giants: Alison Statton and brothers Stuart and Phil Moxham released one album, a handful of singles and a Peel Session; the album, 1980's acclaimed Colossal Youth, is one of the most definitive records of the post punk era. Taking the unprecedented step of making their first ever release a long player certainly paid off. Colossal Youth became a parallel soundtrack to the unsteady stabs of the post punk early eighties, and quickly became one of (the then nascent) Rough Trade Records best sellers. Becalmed, resigned and a little tense, it created a new vocabulary for song.

Since its release the sound of Colossal Youth has seeped into the vocabulary of personal music. Young Marble Giants made the abstract immediate and the introspective warm and natural. Their influence filters through every generation from Nirvana to Belle & Sebastian, and there is something almost canonical about the album's use of voice, muted instruments and space. Their tracks have been covered by Belle & Sebastian and Courtney Love's Hole; Colossal Youth's attention to sparse detail is now a modus operandi for haunted electronica auteurs and spectral singer-songwriters alike, but ultimately, only the Young Marble Giants sound like Young Marble Giants. Domino are proud to re-release Colossal Youth and the Collected Works of Young Marble Giants, drawing together the band's album and singles for the first time ever on a CD set. Including a 32 page booklet, the limited edition initial pressings of the set will also include a third disc, which features 6 tracks the band recorded for John Peel in 1980, making it a complete package of Young Marble Giant's recorded tracks.

The Freed Man

The Freed Man was one of the first and most crucial releases in the burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in media attention in the mid 1990s with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices and Pavement. But while it helped inspire and define a global movement, there's little trace of that ambition within these tracks. Sebadoh in this incarnation are a cherishably intimate experience. The seventy-odd minutes of wayward brilliance collected here offer the listener the rare and recommended opportunity to transport themselves to the weedhazed bedroom where these scraps and songs and pranks were recorded, to imbibe deeply of the haywire creativity that went on in these sessions. Finally released in deluxe edition, this is the second Sebadoh reissue from Domino, following last year's critically lauded release of III. The Freed Man re-issue has been re-mastered and includes a whopping 52 tracks on a single disc, including many tracks that have never seen the light of day until now. It also contains expanded liner notes by Lou Barlow and Eric Gaffney.

Entomology

There needed to be a gloomy remotely intimate glam pop group named after a character created by Franz Kafka who detuned their pained, pining guitars like the Velvet Underground, who screwed up dance beats with as much nimble knowingness and/or amateurish exuberance as Devo, who faced up to long lasting reality with as much sad, mad grace as Magazine, who got stuck into logic as defiantly as Pere Ubu, who had spent a lot of time watching Television and listening to the first six or seven songs written by Buzzcocks.

They took themselves very seriously whilst circling the idea that fun was a very peculiar notion. They were The Sound of Young Scotland, together with Orange Juice, whose guitars were also radiant and brittle, whose rhythms were also scrubbed and blunt, whose vocals were also proud and serious, but who sounded like another group completely. A touch more rational. A little less glaring. A splinter less uptight. Lacking, perhaps, the art for art's sake element that some of us swooned over, and which we see explicitly echoed in the way, say, the popular Franz Ferdinand express themselves. Their own men. In their own special time. Who would know when it was time to quit.

In The Pines

In The Pines and Calenture, reissued by Domino nearly two decades after their original releases, are two very, very different albums. In The Pines was recorded in a Western Australian woolshed on a budget barely clearing four figures of Australia's woebegone dollar and the most expensive single item on the bill, as dutifully noted on the sleeve, was beer. Calenture was recorded in studios in London, Liverpool and Bath, with a major label?s money and a soon to be big-name producer. Two very, very different albums, by one very, very different band. Before embarking on the globe-spanning journeys on which In The Pines and Calenture gestated, The Triffids had, in 1986, banked the first of the succession of masterpieces, Born Sandy Devotional, a furious hymn to the desolation of the soul, set in the Australian outback. Born Sandy Devotional won gleaming reviews at the time, and again upon its re-release in 2006 ("A dazzling treasure," said Uncut. "One of the dozen greatest albums ever made," said The Guardian). The Triffids recorded Born Sandy Devotional in a studio in London, its blindingly intense reflections of their homeland perhaps partly fuelled by homesickness.

In The Pines was to serve as a reconnection. Back in their native Perth, The Triffids rented recording equipment, loaded their vehicles with musical instruments, eight-track recording equipment and the aforesaid beer, and went bush to Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, population 450, a 550 kilometre drive across the emptiness which had inspired Born Sandy Devotional. In The Pines seemed, at the time, an eccentric career move. The Triffids were widely believed, by their modest but fervent fanbase and a legion of crusading critics, to be but one determined, faithful leap from ascent to the stratospheres. Wandering off into the outback, much like one of the deranged characters that had inhabited Born Sandy Devotional, did not seem calculated to redeem the tantalising promise of that astounding album. The Triffids knew what they were doing, though: In The Pines is a thing of modest majesty, at once haunted by the desolation of its circumstances (the gothic folk waltz of the title track, the knelling, intense "Kathy Knows") and suffused with the infectious camaraderie of people making music for the joy of it (a rowdy singalong of Bill Anderson's country standard "Once A Day", led by Graham Lee, at what one can only suspect was the end of a very, very long day).

In The Pines has often been likened, in terms of both songwriting quality and spirit, to Bob Dylan and The Band's The Basement Tapes, and it is not unduly flattered by the comparison. This re-mastered reissue also makes clear that In The Pines, far from being a perverse diversion, occupies a logical position in The Triffids' canon. Its relationship to Born Sandy Devotional was always explicit, in its manufacture amid the very landscape Born Sandy Devotional painted, and in the appearance of "Born Sandy Devotional" the song, which was omitted from the album with which it shared a name. What is fascinating about this reissue beyond, of course, it being a bunch of great songs recorded by a shockingly great rock'n'roll band, is that In The Pines is properly revealed as the sketchbook from which The Triffids would create their most opulent, most ambitious album, Calenture. There was at least one hint of this on the original edition of In The Pines.

"One Soul Less On Your Fiery List," a melody as graceful as its title was cumbersome, reappeared on Calenture as "Hometown Farewell Kiss." This reissue reveals that the In The Pines sessions yielded three more songs that were held over for Calenture: "A Trick Of The Light," "Blinder By The Hour" and "Jerdacuttup Man." On the long drive home from Ravensthorpe and the (only marginally) longer flight back to Europe, The Triffids must have believed that they secreted considerable magic up their sleeves. They did. Abetted by producer Gil Norton (later to work with Pixies, Counting Crows and Foo Fighters among others) and occasional member Adam Peters, The Triffids sculpted an astonishing collection of gorgeous, glorious glacial pop songs, evocative of approximate contemporaries like U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen, as well as of the 70s-vintage orchestral pop standards written by Jimmy Webb for Glen Campbell.

Calenture, repackaged with an extra disc of demo recordings, was named after an arcane term for sunstroke; the album's bewildering failure to shift copies by the million suggested that that the record-buying public had fallen prey to precisely this affliction. Calenture roared into life with its opening track and first single, "Bury Me Deep In Love," a soaring ballad that still deserves to be remembered for more than soundtracking the wedding of Harold and Madge on "Neighbours." Despite starting with the bar set so stratospherically high, Calenture did not waver. "A Trick Of The Light" blossomed into a feather-delicate pop classic reminiscent of fellow under-rated Antipodeans The Go Betweens. "Jerdacuttup Man" McComb's channeling of the internal monologue of a centuries-dead British Museum exhibit drew from Celtic folk roots planted deep beneath the surface sheen of the album's production. "Holy Water," set to a shuffling drum machine, hinted at the always restless Triffids' interest in electronica, something explored further on the newly included b-side "Love The Fever" (and on as-yet-regrettably-unreleased covers of Madonna's "Into The Groove" and Pet Shop Boys' "Rent"). "Save What You Can," the album's closing track for which a new video has been shot is the perfect signoff, definitive David McComb, both ragingly passionate and coolly laconic. "Time is against us," he croons, "even love conspires to disgrace us, and things being what they are..." Two very, very different albums from one very, very different band and two chances to buy records this astonishing is one more than anyone should need.

"Imagine Joy Division curising down a highway in a heat-haze, chrome gleaming - not easy, but easily that good. You really do need a copy of Born Sandy Devotional like you need oxygen.? TIME OUT A "Buried Treasure" **** - MOJO

Much is always made about the remoteness of Western Australia in relation to understanding the Triffids' music. Their music was also informed by a vast wealth of influences and a deep musical knowledge: from UK punk to California rock from a much earlier generation, Sixties' folk, Dylan, Van Morrison, classic soul and country music. Much is always made about the remoteness of Western Australia in relation to understanding the Triffids' music.
Born Sandy Devotional was recorded in London in August 1985 with Gil Norton (fresh from working on Echo & The Bunnymen's Ocean Rain) producing. By now they'd also added "Evil" Graham Lee to the band, contributing the haunting, atmospheric lap and pedal steel guitar that added so much to the album's ambience. Born Sany Devotional [complete with re-mastered audio, bonus tracks, and deluxe packaging] marks the first in a series of Triffids re-issues being released on Domino.

III

Even before his acrimonious departure from Dinosaur Jr, bassist Lou Barlow was recording his own material. Dinosaur's second album, 1987's You're Living All Over Me, had closed with "Poledo," one of Barlow's tape experiments - a chilling mess of funereal folk and disturbing, manipulated found sounds. Lou, it transpires, had been messing about with tape recorders since he was a kid. "My sisters had one of the first cheap tape-recorders," he remembers, "And my cousin showed me that if you half-press the 'ffw' button and the 'record' button and yell into the mic, it'll make this nice stretched-out groaning sound. That cracked me up! I started making cassettes of me playing guitar and singing, real primitive multi-tracking, when I was about twelve. Twenty-five years later, I still have them somewhere."

As he became more and more estranged from Dinosaur front man J Mascis, Barlow immersed himself in his home-recorded music. He made cassettes and began selling them through small 'indie' record stores. "I did it for myself, primarily, but with the understanding that other people would find it. It immediately made sense to some people, like Eric Gaffney." Gaffney, a singer/guitarist/drummer Barlow describes as "a musical terrorist," would form the yin to Barlow's yang in Sebadoh for their first two self-released cassettes, The Freed Weed and Weed Forestin. Together, they'd collate impenetrable experiments, fucked-up songs, confessional folk fragments, and collages of ambient and found sounds, bouncing off each other, trying to outdo each other in this explosion of errant creativity. Theirs was a productive, if fraught relationship. Jason "Jake" Loewenstein, a teenaged musician and home-recorder who'd already purchased Sebadoh tapes, joined the group, and they began to tour. "It was all about freedom and democracy, this chaos" explains Barlow.

They were hella productive boys, too. This remastered re-release of the album comes bolstered with a disk swollen with tracks recorded around the time of III's sessions. The bonus disk opens with the group's Gimme Indie Rock! EP, it's sardonic title track an ecstatic homage-to/deconstruction-of the burgeoning indie-rock genre, complete with shout-outs to Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore and even Dinosaur. "I felt the music of the underground had become one-dimensional, noisy, and I wanted to fashion my own response to that," Barlow told Mojo magazine, last year. "I knew I was on the right track, when people said I was a 'pussy' for playing an acoustic guitar. I'd found my new passion: quiet was the new loud."

The Glasgow School

We're all unbelievably privileged to be a part of this fine project. One of the finest, most underrated groups of all-time and we get to re-issue their long, out-of-print early recordings. This package includes the first four singles along with the aborted first album, Ostrich Churchyard, PLUS a couple of previous unreleased rarities. It really is hard to overstate how important Orange Juice was in terms of influence musically...The Smiths, The Pastels, Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand and countless others are indebted to this maverick group who were arguably the first big indie/guitar pop sensation in the UK (though basically ignored here, criminal that part). But you can read the full story when you pick up The Glasgow School, which compiles all the studio recordings the band did for Postcard Records, the imprint group leader Edwyn Collins ran along with the legendary Alan Horne. The deluxe package (and by deluxe we mean DELUXE, a hardbound booklet that will far out live all of us who own it) will include a few audio surprises, as well as a lengthy historical essay penned by the band's original drummer turned acclaimed writer, Steven Daly.
